Hi. My 11-year-old son has found reading through Harry Potter. But does not want to branch out. I suggested we find out what J K Rowling recommends, and he was into that. Problem is it's not obvious what she does for his age.

My sone loved the female character, Hermione. Do you have a recommendation that you think J K Rowling would approve of?

How to be a Mind Reader by I C Yu.

I believe J K Rowling's fav book as a youngster was "The Little White Horse" by Elizabeth Goudge (it was my favourite too). Probably quite old fashioned now but might be worth a try (I'm still disappointed that the new edition doesn't have the lovely illustrations in it)!)

Worth asking her on Twitter she’s quite active

Magisterium series is also good.

Diane Wynne Jones is very similar ideas but imo better written. Start with Charmed Life perhaps?

This is all good advice. Thanks. I can use this.

Not sure if they're JKR-approved, but I'd suggest:

Diane Wynne Jones's Howl's Moving Castle
Neil Gaiman's The Graveyard Book
Philip Pullman's Northern Lights (book 1 in the His Dark Materials series)

I went to a Philip Pullman event recently and he also recced two new books: The Murderer's Ape and The Explorer (sorry, you'll need to google the authors' names).

Francis hardinge's books are great. More like traditional fantasy than harry potter but they're beautifully written.
