Hi, DS1 will really get into reading if he finds the right book but mostly doesn't. He got Max Brooks The Island (Minecraft adventure) for Christmas and is loving it. I want to find him a next book while he is a reading frame of mind. The books he has previously enjoyed are Wimpy Kid, Tom Gates and the Rick Riordan books (Lightning Thief etc). He has also read David Walliams (liked but not massively into, and some of Alex Ryder (liked but found a bit hard). So what could you suggest?

DS enjoyed all of those, but tends to favour the adventure / fantasy over silly/funny.

Recent adventure/fantasy hes liked
The Wizard of Once.
Skulduggery Pleasant - there's a hole series so if your DS likes them then hes sorted for a while
The other Rick Riodon series - some have crossovers with Percy Jackkson - Magnus Chase and Trials of Apollo

Silly ones, similiar to Tom Gates and Wimpy Kid
13th floor treehouse (another series)

DS just turned 11 is currently reading hitchhikers guide to the galaxy and Star Wars: from a certain point of view

He doesn’t read a lot of fiction and his other books are things like Prisoners of Geography or Transit maps of the world!

Thanks all. I will have a look at all of those. I think Hitchhikers is too difficult for him, but a great book.

If he likes animals you could try the Willard Price "Adventure" series - they are still readily available, and although they are a tad dated, all the animal facts are correct - I still us the knowledge I learned from when I first read them as a child for quizzes etc, and they are exciting with great story lines. They are just "low tech" so to speak - no phones or computers or whatnot.
Of he prefers sci-fi/futuristic type stuff, then Nicholas Fisk is good - try the "Starstormers" series, or "Grinny" to start with.
My youngest DS ( just gone 11) really liked Enid Blyton's "Barney" books, and we've now started on the "XXX of Adventure" series to. Again, they don't have much modern about them, but they are exciting without being "too much" and all have happy endings.

Ds loves the Middle School series by James Patterson.

My 10yo DS isn't a keen reader but has enjoyed the 13 storey treehouse series, along the same lines as tom gates and wimpy kid. Maybe a bit easy/young for a 10 yo but i take the view that reading anything is better that nothing. His absolute favourite is Wonder by RC Palacio (this was the first book that his dyslexic friend has been motivated enough to read on his own) and also just enjoyed Wolf Brother by Michele Paver.

Diary of a wimpy kid
Tom gates
Asterisk books
Horrible histories

Ds is 11 and likes all of those

Danger is Everywhere series by David O'Doherty

The Astounding Broccoli Boy by Frank Cottrell Boyce and others by him

Oor Wullie, Broons, Beano etc

As well as Tom Gates, Treehouse series, Harry Potter and others already mentioned.

If your son enjoyed Rick Riordan look at his website where he recommends various series. My son, who read & enjoyed all the Rick Riordan series, is enjoying some of the books we discovered on there.
