Books about Greeks (for 8yo good reader)

DS is utterly in love with the Greek Myths.
He's read the Percy Jackson series.
He's read (and re-read obsessively) a fabulous Usborne book of Greek tales.
He's read the Marcia Williams' Greek tales book many many times.
What can he read now? (Not really ready for Pope's translation of the Ilyad!!)

He's a very good reader, but quite a sensitive chap. He definitely wants more books on the Greeks Grin
He's not as interested in Romans (apparently)

Sorry, meant to say, I'd have given him the Eagle of the Ninth if Romans were cutting it!

I'd be interested in a book about real Greeks, e.g. Plato, Eratosthenes etc if anyone can recommend one, as he does read non-fiction too.

DS loved the CDs "Atticus the Storyteller"

I'll ask dd1 when she gets back - she's in to all that stuff and is also a good reader (just turned 9). I'm assuming the Beasts of Olympus series is too young? It's a big hit with dd2 at the moment.

PhilODox · 28/07/2017 12:10

Thank you. I had dismissed beasts of Olympus as it seemed derivative of Percy Jackson... Perhaps I'm being too harsh!

Dd1 recommends The Kane Chronicles and (though it's Roman) The Roman Mysteries.

Dd2 is only 6, so Beasts of Olympus is probably too young.

Thanks Cinderellas, I think dd has Kane chronicles book 1, will ask her.

I loved Odysseus, the Greatest Hero of them all by Tony Robinson.
Long out of print but available on Amazon second hand or on Audible audio book.

My daughters love D'Audelaire's book of Greek Myths. There's also the Magic Treehouse series, has at least one if not more set in Ancient Greece.

My DD aged nearly 11 has read most of the Usborne Greek myths books. She's then moved onto adult books with more depth.
She's a whizz and has even drawn family trees about how they are all connected....

Thanks for the further suggestions Smile

This might be a bit old for him, but as you mentioned books about real Greeks like Plato then what about Sophie's world? I remember enjoying it myself but would have been about 11. Would keep it in mind though if he keeps up his interest in these topics!

Blue champagne thank you for those! I was keeping an eye on this thread because my DD is also a massive Rick Riordan and in particular, all things Greek fan! I've ordered one of the Rosemary Surtcliff books for her to try out!
