DS will be 11 next month. He has asked for very little but loves to read. He particularly enjoys fantasy / distopian type books.
His favourites include
Christopher Paolini - Inheritance series (currently re reading them all)
Garth Nix - Keys to the kingdom
The hunger games
The Maze runner
Terry Brooks
Susan Cooper - the dark is rising
Please can anyone suggest any similar, thankyou

Philip Reeve- Mortal Engines sequence. Begin with Mortal Engines. Catherine Fisher- Book of the Crow sequence, four books starting with Relic Master. Also By Catherine Fisher is Incarceron, which has a dystopian theme. Almost anything by Diana Wynne Jones. Charmed Life is a good one to start with. If he is OK with creepy stuff, Neil Gaiman's Coraline is great; also the Graveyard Book by the same author. If he enjoys dystopias try Lois Lowry's The Giver, which is very thought- provoking. Also Malorie Blackman's Noughts & Crosses series, though they are dark and often violent, but no more so than Hunger Games.

Good list above, would add:
Michelle Paver Chronicles of Ancient Darkness
Temeraire series (dragons in the Napoleonic wars!)
Old but my dd loved them as a follow on to Eragon - the Harper Hall books by Anne McCaffrey - Dragonsong is the first one (these are YA, be aware many of the other Pern books are more suited to adults/older teens)

Terry pratchett - absolutely all of the books
Michael grant - Gone series - everyone over the age of 15 disappears and the kids have to form a society
Cassandra Claire - mortal instruments series - more fantasy than sci fi
Tolkien - hobbit/ lord of the rings

TwigTheWonderKid · 20/07/2017 22:21

DS has just started A Wrinkle In Time

Synecdoche · 20/07/2017 22:22

The Across the Nightingale Floor series by Lian Hearn is amazing and would fit with your son's reading tastes I think!

thefutureisfemale · 20/07/2017 22:23

Cirque du freak by Darren Shan- AMAZING

thefutureisfemale · 20/07/2017 22:23

OP- I actually have two sets of these books so I am happy to send them on to your DS

Synecdoche · 20/07/2017 22:25

Oh, and he might like Bloodtide and Bloodsong by Melvin Burgess as well. Based on an Icelandic saga and really gripping!

Acornantics · 20/07/2017 22:27

Sneaking in to bookmark for DS also 11 Smile. Always looking for new titles for him and DS 13. I think it's a tricky age as 11 is too young for some YA books but they still want something challenging and engaging.

DS recently enjoyed Spellslinger (I think it was called that!)

girlwhowearsglasses · 20/07/2017 22:28

Just come to shout Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy really loudly.

And Terry Pratchett obvs

hangingkebab · 20/07/2017 22:32

Saw your thread title and immediately thought of Memoirs of a Dangerous Alien by Maggie Prince - I loved it as a young teen.

Monr0e · 22/07/2017 12:36

I forgot I posted this! Thank you all so much for your recommendations. Going to go through them all now. My DM also wants to get him some books so hopefully we'll get him a few between us.

Enders game by orson Scott card - there are also loads of sequels although they are not as good, but Enders game stands alone

Heinlein's citizen of the galaxy is good for that age

thefutureisfemale · 22/07/2017 18:04

Drop me a message and we can sort it out x

Acornantics · 22/07/2017 22:32

The film of Ender's Game is also very good.
