Help please
DD3 is 9 in a few week voracious reader, reading she older but want to stay away from teen books. We have the MLP books, Jacqueline Wilson, David Williams, the worst witch etc I'm looking for more books for her birthday.

Have you tried Noel Streatfield books? Ballet shoes etc. They are old fashioned and quite a tricky read for some children now but are beautiful, wonderfully illustrated and not at all teenage.

My DD enjoyed
The Secret Garden
What Katy Did, What Katy did Next
Holly Webb books - she did a sequel to The Secret Garden too
Noel Streatfeild
The How to train a Dragon Series
Lemony Snicket books
The Spiderwick Chronicles
She's currently charging through Harry Potter, though I've not decided if she can read the last two yet as she's only just 10.

If she likes Horsey books, Pippa Funnel has written some, there's also the Riverdale Pony series.

"When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit" by Judith Kerr (the author of the Mog books and The Tiger Who Came To Tea).

I was about 9 when I read it.

Great ideas, we have quite a few Holly Webbs and she's started on her sisters Harry Potters.

Finding this Birthday difficult, she loves her tech of course, isn't really into dolls, she's got 2 older sisters so has inherited a lot.

My DD has really enjoyed Mallory Towers and a series called Trebzion which is kind of a modern day version of that. She also like the Roman dectives series and anything by Eva Ibbot, who writes supernatural/comedy stuff, a bit in the same vein as the worst witch.

The sleepover club

Animal ark books are brilliant too!

WindwardCircle · 30/06/2017 10:43

Just to add, check out the book people site. They often have whole sets of books a lot cheaper than buying individually. I got the Trebzion set from there for DD for Christmas.

Harry Potter
The classics, what Katy did etc
The ruby redfort series by Lauren childs

Animal ark is way too young

PhilODox · 30/06/2017 10:50

My DD loves Ruby Redfort series, David Baddiel 'on books, and Percy Jackson series.
I also recommend S.F.Said's Phoenix to everyone, as it's wonderful.

How about the Little House on the Prairie series? I loved those when I was about that age. Also Mallory Towers and St Clare's. As well as Ballet Shoes and White Boots I also read the 'Gemma and her Sisters' series although I'm not sure how dated that might be now.

BlueChampagne · 05/07/2017 16:42

Second Lemony Snicket and How to Train your Dragon.

Wigeon · 05/07/2017 16:45

My DD's favourite recent books are:

Any Ruby Redfort
Wolf Wilder
Cogheart
Moonlocket (sequel to the above)
The Apothecary

All really good adventures, strong plots, great female (and male!) characters.
