Help identifying a book

I read it in the early 90s, but have seen it in the library since. Aimed 4-6yr olds I imagine

A girl has a graze on her knee. On her way walking home, she meets various people - friends, neighbours etc. To each one, she tells a different story ie she fought off a dragon, she faced a wild dog etc.

At the end she admits (possibly to mum) that she fell over in the playground.

Any ideas what it is called?

There's one more book, which I can't find under the title I thought I had for it...

It's about a girl who has a plaster on her knee and the mum tells her a story whilst she removes it, to distract her.
I thought it was called Mother's Magic but that only brings up a Susan Hill one at £20 and I thought her books were longer. This was definitely in the 4-6yr age category

It could be the Susan Hill one as she has written a few picture books. Seems quite difficult to get hold of, though.

The cover I found shown for the Susan Hill one isn't how i remember it being, but it could be different.

I'm looking for one that had funny little gnome type men in that ate cloudberries? Anyone? Sorry to piggyback your post. Your book sounds lovely OP & have added it to our library list.

Gnomes?

Ooh I wish it was, but sadly no. I think it may have been a russian story about 2(?) travelling(?) men/gnomes/dwarves that I bought in a bookshop in Czechoslovakia (as it was then) I just remember that they ate cloudberries. Wish my memory wasn't so bad.

Are you thinking of Little Grey Men by BB ? About three gnomes called Dodder, Sneezewort and Baldmoney ( I think ) and their search for their lost brother Cloudberry? Sequel called Down the Bright Stream.

Harree · 20/05/2017 23:18

No @pollyhemlock it's not that one, although that one does fit the criteria I've given remarkably well! They definitely ate the cloudberries. I can see the illustrations quite clearly but really don't recall the story at all. Sad Thanks though, another one for the list!
