Great books 9-12

I've just finished reading a couple of brand new children's books with my tutees (ages 9-11) and I cannot recommend 'The Goldfish Boy' and 'The Huntress' highly enough! 'The Goldfish Boy' is great for discussing OCD and 'The Huntress' has an amazing heroine as the main character (which makes a difference from all of the princess books I've ploughed through!) If you have any more recommendations for this age group, I'd much appreciate it (especially if they're fairly new).

The Dragon with a Chocolate Heart by Stephanie Burgis is great. Also the Dreamsnatcher trilogy by Abi Elphinstone and Cogheart by Peter Bunzl.
I'm glad you enjoyed The Huntress (Sea?) - I picked it up the other day and I'm looking forward to starting it!

They're a group of children who have a secret society with secret language etc. That's the first one, there's a whole series.

The Girl of Ink and Stars is absolutely magnificent and I've had fantastic feedback from kids (male and female) about it. The Waterstones Kids Books of the Month are always a good bet for this age (most if not all of the books mentioned above have been their books of the month)! I'd second pp's suggestion of Wonder - this is a book that everyone should read! Fantastic for encouraging development of empathy and for discussing bullying/social exclusion.

There's a great new trilogy out for pre teens but it is quite challenging and thought provoking. It's the Cat's Cradle Trilogy by T. J. Healy and the third one, Cat Lives is particularly good with the main character on a world wide adventure discovering that we are all the same underneath, wherever we live. Great for anyone worried about Brexit being divisive! You could probably read it as a standalone but the first two are good too. They are only on Kindle books though.
I also add another vote for Wonder. I am just rereading it myself. Love it

We loved 'Fortunately the Milk', by Neil Gaiman,
'Alfie Bloom and the Secret of Hexbridge Castle' and
The Magnus Fin trilogy.

And 'Galaxy's Most Wanted' by John Koeplfler and 'Herbert's Wormhole' by Peter Nelson and Rohitash Rao.

If you're looking for something brand-brand new, then the latest one by Dan Walker, Sky Thieves, looks like a good read. It's not your typical pirates' story and has a female main character, a real heroine whose character develops as the story progresses. Saw a bunch of good reviews already on Amazon too, though the book has only come out this week. Should keep your tutees interested.

I'll give 'The Goldfish Boy' and 'The Huntress' a go myself - sound interesting!

LOVED those two - they are really well written.
We Are Giants looks at disability & bullying.
Cowgirl, set in Wales, is a great one about being who you are.
Library of Lemons deals with grief, it's clear that Dad is suffering from depression. Brilliantly written.
Beetle Boy, is a fun adventure... with beetles! Good to read out loud. And the second in the series, Beetle Queen, has just been released.

Another great one to add is Wed Wabbit by Lissa Evans. It's kind of a modern Alice in Wonderland and very funny.
