I was thinking maybe Alain de Botton? Any better ideas?

For pleasure not school.

Thanks

I read Sophie's world around That age. Philosophy trip with a story. Can't recall the author right now though.

The Philosophy Files, and the sequel. Aimed at teens, might be too basic if your dc has already read some, but a good introduction.
