Fiction books about maths problems/reasoning- are there any?

I have an idea that I have seen some fiction books that are based around mathematical reasoning problems, but I am not sure if I did, or if I have confused the murderous maths books with something else!?! I am hoping that if these books DO exist that the wisdom of mumsnet can help me track them down!

And if they don't - someone needs to write them Grin (please!).

What sort of age are you looking for?

My DD has had a couple of these: www.amazon.co.uk/Math-Inspectors-Story-Claymore-Diamond/dp/150313699X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1476952022&sr=8-1&keywords=math+detectives

I like the Number Devil better. It reminds me of The Phantom Tollbooth:
www.amazon.co.uk/Number-Devil-Mathematical-Adventure/dp/1847080537/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1476952103&sr=8-1&keywords=number+devil

Thanks! Reading level wise, her current favourites are Percy Jackson/Diane Wynne Jones type level. So a decent sized book. Off to explore those links...

They may be a bit easy for you then.

www.amazon.co.uk/Maths-Quest-Mysteries-David-Glover/dp/184835634X/ref=sr_1_14?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1476956344&sr=1-14&keywords=maths+fiction+books

And the rest of the series may be another option.

Have a look at The Square Root of Summer
My dd is reading it at the moment - involves a brainy teenager and her ideas about time travel. Actually pretty good but a little grown up - how old is your dd?

madamehooch · 20/10/2016 19:28

Try :-

Mysterious Benedict Society

Chasing Vermeer

39 Clues

Hiddeninplainsight · 20/10/2016 19:52

Mrsmortis I have The Number Devil and the 1st Maths inspector on order grin

Madamehooch I'm going to have a little look at those suggestions now, thank you!

ramonaquimby DD is 7. She is a very good reader, and so the stuff she reads is very much in the 9-12 range. She is good with language, is okay with threat, but but we (obviously) filter all the pre-teen stuff because she is too young to deal with many of the relationship themes. I'm kind of guessing that the Square Root of Summer may have themes that are a little old?

also The Phantom Tollbooth

Colyngbourne · 20/10/2016 21:42

These aren't about maths exactly but the Russell Stannard books "The Time and Space of Uncle Albert", and "Uncle Albert and the Quantum Quest" are about maths and science type things

BlueChampagne · 21/10/2016 22:48

George and the Big Bang?

BlueChampagne · 21/10/2016 22:49

Don't know if Alice in Quantumland is any good ....
