Does anyone have any recommendations for books about refugees please? Either picture books or YA, preferably written in the last few years. Thanks.

There's a lovely picture book called Refuge, can't remember author. It's the Christmas story but with relevance to current refugee situation.

DD really rated Looking at the Stars by Jo Cotterill

The Journey by Francesca Sanna is a lovely picture book and very moving.

The Arrival by Shaun Tan - picture book/graphic novel.

For YA there's Refugee Boy by Benjamin Zephaniah.

the only one i could think of is not at all recent (1960s) but it is so worth reading. When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit by Judith Kerr. and also the two sequels Bombs on Aunt Dainty and A Small Person Far Away. they are based on Kerr's real life experiences as a Jewish girl in early Nazi Germany and her travels across Europe and England as she and her family escape

MinnowAndTheBear · 07/10/2016 04:17

I came on here to say Refugee Boy by Benjamin Zephaniah. It was a real eye opener.

Would recommend The Happiest Refugee by Anh Do, but he was a miserable sod when I met him, so I immediately distrust the title of his book.

Just in case the kids think this is something which only affects kids from other cultures.... they practised on a lot of us firstSad

Barbara Henderson: Fit for Luck - story about the Highland Clearances

Marita McKenna:Under the Hawthorne Tree
book about kids trying to find relatives they don't know in the Great Famine

The stories are still all too real for many of us out in the colonies...

Not recent but fab nonetheless - Kiss the Dust by Elizabeth Laird about a young girl and her family fleeing Iran during the war between Iraq and the Kurdish population. I haven't read it for years but it really affected me as a YA.

walruswhiskers · 07/10/2016 19:19

The Silver Sword

OverAndAbove · 07/10/2016 19:20

Again not recent, but I Am David is brilliant and very memorable as a story

madgerussell1920 · 07/10/2016 19:23

Goodnight Mr Tom by Michelle Magorian
When the Siren Wailed by Noel Streatfeild

imip · 09/10/2016 07:23

Must agree with When Hitler stole the pink rabbit. I know it's not recent, but I found that was the beauty of it, it was every bit as relevant today. I think we borrowed a free kindle copy?

beatricequimby · 12/10/2016 19:27

Again not recent but I go by Sea, I go by Land by PL Travers is about a British girl sent to the US during WW2. Really good for an understanding that British people have been refugees too and a fab story.

Redsrule · 18/10/2016 04:17

After Tomorrow by Gillian Cross is very powerful
