From picture book giant Oliver Jeffers and typographic artist Sam Winston comes a magical and unforgettable new story - which will encourage readers of all ages to question, explore and imagine.

A Child of Books tells the tale of a little girl who sails a raft across a sea of words and invites a little boy to come away with her on an adventure through a land of stories.

The book uses Oliver’s signature handwriting and artwork together with Sam’s typographic landscapes, shaped from printed extracts of 42 classic books and lullabies.

To celebrate the publication of A Child of Books, just tell us the book (or books) that first made you or your child love reading. Post your answer here for a chance to win a signed copy of the book, a limited edition print and tote bag, plus a brilliant book caddy to store your books at home.

This discussion is sponsored by Walker Books and will end on 5 October

We have done all the normal starters but are stuck at the moment on
'Underpants, wonderpants'. he loves the idea of being RUDE, he enjoys giggling to the rhyming and being like superman.

pinkspideruk · 04/10/2016 22:34

for me it was all about Enid Blyton - The Famous Five, Secret Seven, Mallory Towers :)

fazkin · 04/10/2016 23:03

My daughter's is Roald dahl books. Charlie and Chocolate factory and BFG really did it for her.

TiggersAngel7774 · 05/10/2016 00:48

i loved enid blyton books and Nancy Drew series

BeBesideTheSea · 05/10/2016 01:11

DS has always loved being read to, but it is the How to Train Your Dragon series that have made him want to start again at the beginning and read all over again once finished. They are so suspense-filled that I find them real page turners too!

Me - Enid Blyton books - I researched Malory towers in my 20s!
DC -.the gruffalo, the paper dolls, goodnight moon.

43percentburnt · 05/10/2016 01:55

Not researched - re read - bloody auto correct!

ShiteNeighbour · 05/10/2016 01:59

I was addicted to Enid Blyton as a child. She definitely gets the credit for my love of books

My love of reading came from reading Enid Blyton's Famous Five books. I loved them, I went to the library each week to get more. I think I read them all!

Wind in the Willows. My dad used to read my brother and me a chapter every night before we went to bed. Happy memories!

handbar · 05/10/2016 16:07

I think I started with Noddy books which led me on to a love of Enid Blyton adventure stories. My favourite being The Rockingdon Mystery.

lucyrobinson · 05/10/2016 20:58

We loved the Biff and Chip books. Now all Enid Blyton and Roald Dahl books. Anything that excites the imagination. We love a book that we can't put down.

BubblingBlancmange · 05/10/2016 21:28

I remember my mum reading Milly Molly Mandy and My Naughty Little Sister to me. I loved them - she was a great story-teller.

SorchaMumsnet · 06/10/2016 12:21

Thanks for all your posts - I've enjoyed finding out all the books that got into you and your children into reading. Looks like Enid Blyton and Roald Dahl were firm favourites (they were for me too!) but nice to see a lot of different ones here too.

The competition is now closed and the winner is... queenoftheschoolrun Congratulations - hope you enjoy the goodie bag plus the caddy to store your new and old books (maybe the Mr Men if you still have them!)

We all loved Harry Potter, the Susan Cooper books and the Golden Compass but mine and my family's current favourite is The Circle of Candles by Jessica Rowan. Even my youngest who was a reluctant reader zipped through it and has wanted to read more ever since.

I loved Joan Aitken's Necklace of Raindrops as a 7 year old...still do. DD loves it also but devours books as a hobby anyway. Apparently, cheap but good books on sale at some event in Tunbridge Wells from beginning of November. Might check it out. Saw it on Facebook book. Anyone heard? Don't want to waste my time. At Camden Centre apparently???

My favourite childhood story was The Velveteen Rabbit. I couldn't remember the title but told the story to my husband who then bought me a special copy for Christmas. Another story I can't remember the title of is about a little doll who gets forgotten in the freezer at a shop, a little girl sees her and makes her tiny clothes to keep her warm... The books that ignited my love of reading were the Mallory Towers books by Enid Blyton, which I read when I was 10/11; the perfect follow-on from the famous five. My DD is only 6 but I'm so looking forward to reading those to/with her when she's a bit older Blush
