Gripping books for girls (8 years)?

Hi,

DD will be 9 in December. Loves reading witch/ detective stories especially series. Loved worst witch series, Araminta spook, the latest Witch Switch / Witch wars series, and a non witchy book called Miss Petitfour.

I read a few old threads and Murder most Unlady like was recommended, raving reviews on Amazon, ordered it but it's too old for her - something about cigarettes and crushes on 'the one' or something in the first few pages. Don't think it was appropriate for an eight or nine year old!

Any other recs?

Many thanks

How about the Carbonel books? If she likes stories about witches she might like one about a witches cat.

Ok! Brilliant, thanks Mrsm x

Witchworld and Witchmyth by Emma Fischel have hit the spot with similarly-aged DS1.

Roman Mysteries by Caroline Lawrence might be worth a go too.

And if she hasn't read Chris Riddell's Goth Girl books, definitely try those.

DD loves the Atticus Claw books

Not a series, but what about Witch Week, or some of the other Chrestomanci books? By Diana Wynne Jones.

The Penderwicks series; The Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place; Eva Ibbotson- Which Witch and others. I would also recommend the Flossie Teacake books- not mysteries, but very entertaining
