What to read to Reception class during National Storytelling Week

The Reception teacher has sent a letter inviting parents to come in and read a story to the class. My daughter is very keen for me to do this! The thing is, I can't think of a suitable book to offer to read!

My daughter has always enjoyed lots of different books and hasn't been the sort to request the same ones over and over again, and so we haven't really got an obvious favourite.

I don't want to read something really obvious like a Julia Donaldson. I don't want it to be too babyish or too long. It'd be nice if it could include some repetitive phrase where the children could perhaps get involved?

Having said that, I think it needs to be more of a story than a debate: one of our favourites is 'Would you Rather?' by John Burningham, but I'm not confident enough to facilitate group discussion on every page!

Can anyone suggest any stories that might be suitable?

Supertato is fantastic! Really funny and would get the kids laughing the important thing is to read something new and interesting.

Alan Garner's Jack and the Beanstalk. So well written it tells itself. Excellent pictures too.

DH and DS did this to my rec DS last year......DH read one of the Duck in the Truck books...I think it was Fix It Duck.....and that went down very well. Book has good clear pictures and you can see lots going on! So DH got them to look at the pictures and join in!

DS read No-Bot The Robot With No Bottom - which they also liked and found hilarious!

Children like any books imo...but the funny ones seem to go down best across the board!

Cinderella's Bum is sure to get some laughs too, plus nice little twist at the end.

If you are good at doing silly voices then you simply MUST read The Book With No Pictures It is brilliant. Scroll down to see the author (Novak) read it for some inspiration, it has the kids in stitches!!

There was a wee lassie who swallowed a midgee .It is great fun. Lots of repetion, so you can pause for the children to join in.

The Night Pirates, The Runaway Dinner or My Big Shouting Day are huge favourites in my house

Yippee - more choices! I'm going to have to splash out on a few!

I said no Julia Donaldson, but my daughter has just reminded me about Jack and the Flum Flum tree which is repetitive and very silly, and I'd get to say 'knickers' which would no doubt cause a titter.

Right: getting on Amazon now. Any more ideas welcomed!

I've ordered The Runaway Dinner :)

I was going to recommend either Supertato or The Book With No Pictures, but I've been beaten to both already!

Yay. We think The Runaway Dinner is really funny

I also like the sound of The Book With No Pictures but it doesn't come out in paperback until early Feb which is too late!

The book people had it in for less than £5 a few weeks ago, I got a few copies to use as birthday presents.

I read The Runaway Dinner to the class yesterday! It went very well, and none of the children or the teacher had heard the story before, which was an added bonus. DD asked for it again at bedtime too.
