The books you love as a child stay with you forever, they live inside your imagination and shape the way you see the world. There's nothing quite like sharing these stories with a new generation. Watching as their imaginations are captured by the very same tales of giants, magical lands and adventures that once enthralled us.

That's why this year we want to put together the ultimate children's reading list; the comprehensive guide to stories you think no child should grow up without. We'd like you to share your favourites, old or new, and tell us all the reasons why you think they deserve a place on this list.

We'll take the recommendations from this thread and scour the boards for more, to create the ultimate list of children's books. Then we'll put it to vote in attempt to find the best children's book ever written. Because well, who doesn't love a poll?

So, tell us why you think the books you love should make the list, and you'll be entered into a prize draw to win £100 to spend at online book retailer Wordery

each peach pear plum was a very much loved book for my two. The rhyming words and beautiful illustrations were recited off by heart for a long time in our house. It was fun to spy the characters in the book a definately a real classic.

i love the hungry caterpillar it's such a great book and i still give as a baby gift as you can never tire of it! My 6yr absolutely adores the dr guess books which are great for her to read to herself and are great fun! Is your Mama a Llama is another favourite in our house, a wonderful book which we all know of by heart! : )

rachheap2014 · 14/01/2016 12:22

My youngest is 3 and her favourite book is "The Very Hungry Caterpillar"

The Jolly Postman every time. I've gifted it to friends and it was amongst the first books I got for my two DC, unfortunately the letters invariably always get lost I still have an almost intact copy from when my girls were little, a friends children took one letter which really annoyed me.

It is funny and educational and contains the almost dead art of letter writing. I've not met anyone who has failed to fall in love with the book.

We've been rereading the Ivor the Engine books, which were developed to go alongside the original TV series back in the 1970s. DS and I love them, you get a real sense of the characters and small town North Wales and the joy of "being alive and steaming". There are 6 stories in the series and they bring a smile to our faces, and have gentle humour and wonderful illustrations.

Oh and also 'we're going on a bear hunt' I used to read it to my DC every single night whe they were little, they'd ask to have it read to them every night would end up in a riot and laughter and singing. Love love loved it and still do. Sometimes DD's spontaneously break into 'we're not scared' might read it to my youngest tonight.

Emgrace · 14/01/2016 12:53

My favorite children's book has to be the cat in the hat. My son and i love reading it together!

happysouls · 14/01/2016 14:05

Green Eggs and Ham by Dr Seuss! It was one of my favourite books as a child and my son loved it too! Dr Seuss books are so lovely to read with the great word play and fantastic pictures. This one in particular flows so well with such a brilliant story and ending! Smiling just thinking about it!

I love a book called 'Little Big Feet' about a tiny witch. Also 'The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe' (anything with witches in!)

MillyVanilli222 · 14/01/2016 15:24

I've always loved the Famous Five and Secret Seven books - they were so full of adventure, and I think they're still enjoyed just as much by kids today than they were when I was young!

ann28 · 14/01/2016 15:24

A Squash and a Squeeze. A lot could be learnt from this book with the current housing crisis!
