The books you love as a child stay with you forever, they live inside your imagination and shape the way you see the world. There's nothing quite like sharing these stories with a new generation. Watching as their imaginations are captured by the very same tales of giants, magical lands and adventures that once enthralled us.

That's why this year we want to put together the ultimate children's reading list; the comprehensive guide to stories you think no child should grow up without. We'd like you to share your favourites, old or new, and tell us all the reasons why you think they deserve a place on this list.

We'll take the recommendations from this thread and scour the boards for more, to create the ultimate list of children's books. Then we'll put it to vote in attempt to find the best children's book ever written. Because well, who doesn't love a poll?

So, tell us why you think the books you love should make the list, and you'll be entered into a prize draw to win £100 to spend at online book retailer Wordery

Mine was Thread Bear so cute I used to love all Mick Inkpen books

It has to be the gruffalo. I spent many nights reading this to my boys at bedtime. The pictures are so captivating and the rhyming words just roll off the tongue. The book also created many imaginative adventures searching for the gruffalo in our local woods!!

I loved the Narnia books when I was growing up and my dc have all loved them and the associated films.

One which they have introduced me to is the Land of Stories. It is kind of Narnia meets Grimm fairy tales. We are eagerly awaiting the final book and first film.

When I was a teenager I loved to read the Sweet Velley High books.

juju3 · 14/01/2016 09:25

Has to be Peter Pan - a magical book as popular now as it was 100 years ago when written

wulfy1010 · 14/01/2016 09:27

I loved the Narnia books, I liked the idea of stepping through a portal somewhere to a land of adventure:)

lizd31 · 14/01/2016 09:28

I love all the Roald Dahl books but The Twits is my favourite. When my nephew was little I used to read it to him & turn his toy monkey on its head & pretend it was a Mugglewump, he always loved it no matter how many times I read it. Now he has a little girl of his own & I do the same with her & she loves is too.

janeyf1 · 14/01/2016 09:34

Jack and the Beanstalk for the adventure!

pixiewolfe · 14/01/2016 09:36

I personally loved the tiger that came to tea and the The Bears' Picnic. Classical. (I even watch someone read them on youtube like )
I think though that as long as you read and lose yourself in the story and characters any story could make the list :)

I just loved all of Roald Dahl's books - my favourites were 'The BFG', 'The Twits' and 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory'. I read them over and over and I even read them again as an adult.

They are just so funny, written in a way that doesn't patronise kids and many of them also give children the confidence that they can achieve great things even if they don't live in the best circumstances like Charlie, Matilda and James do.

Annbunce · 14/01/2016 09:59

My favourite books were the Mrs Pepperpot books. As a child I used to get lost in the stories and would read for hours. They were easy to read and took you on lots of adventures.

createbeauty · 14/01/2016 10:01

One Ted alls out of bed. My son loves it.

Laineyflo · 14/01/2016 10:02

My DS loves the Dirty Bertie books, they always give us a good giggle before bedtime!

mamof3boys · 14/01/2016 10:27

I have lots of favourites. For younger children I love Stick Man. For slightly older children I love most Enid Blyton books but the Faraway Tree books are my favourites.

freefan · 14/01/2016 10:41

My daughter just loves the book 'The Last NooNoo Tree', it is a fantastic book and the graphics are so colourful and fun, always the first book she reaches for.

jt75 · 14/01/2016 11:02

The Secret Garden for its think positive message.

goose1964 · 14/01/2016 11:11

cazzzie987 · 14/01/2016 11:15

Fantastic Mr Fox xx

Seeyounearertime · 14/01/2016 11:19

Burglar Bill

Gazelda · 14/01/2016 11:24

Oh, I've just thought of another one (apologies if its been mentioned upthread).
The Very Noisy Night.

My DH is the best at reading it with the voices. It is so reassuring, funny, comforting and gentle. Beautiful artwork with lots of little details to look for. It's lovely to read before bedtime.
We went to a theatrical adaptation, but because it didn't have Daddy's voice, my DD didn't like it much!
