The books you love as a child stay with you forever, they live inside your imagination and shape the way you see the world. There's nothing quite like sharing these stories with a new generation. Watching as their imaginations are captured by the very same tales of giants, magical lands and adventures that once enthralled us.

That's why this year we want to put together the ultimate children's reading list; the comprehensive guide to stories you think no child should grow up without. We'd like you to share your favourites, old or new, and tell us all the reasons why you think they deserve a place on this list.

We'll take the recommendations from this thread and scour the boards for more, to create the ultimate list of children's books. Then we'll put it to vote in attempt to find the best children's book ever written. Because well, who doesn't love a poll?

So, tell us why you think the books you love should make the list, and you'll be entered into a prize draw to win £100 to spend at online book retailer Wordery

Jolly postman is a great hit

strawberrisc · 14/01/2016 18:19

Love you Forever. I saw it on Friends, Googled it, found out it was real and ordered it! My daughter loves it!

becky004 · 14/01/2016 19:19

The Water Babies by Charles Kingsley have read it over and over and now get to read it with my children :-)

mizzwardy · 14/01/2016 19:36

clarem100 · 14/01/2016 20:18

the secret garden - a timeless classic

melonpanini · 14/01/2016 20:34

I love Enid Blyton's Magic Faraway Tree.

Nettie17 · 14/01/2016 20:41

Charlie and the chocolate factory, no matter how many times I read the book I still got excited when he found the golden ticket!

arat · 14/01/2016 20:56

My favourites when I was young were Enid Blyton books, especially the Naughtiest Girl series. It's good to see DD (8) getting into them and enjoying them. Just shows how good the writing is that they can stand the passing of time.

mave · 14/01/2016 21:05

I love the hungry caterpillar by Eric carle!

hanarees · 14/01/2016 21:10

I loved Whatever Next! by Jill Murphy - I remember reading it over and over again and thinking it was magical!

rhinosuze · 14/01/2016 21:18

When I was little it was the very hungry caterpillar, as I grew up I became enchanted by the Narnia books and can't wait for my girl to be old enough for them!

gamerwidow · 14/01/2016 21:21

Percy the Park Keeper is very popular with DD.

Oo.. I love a good book chat! I LOVED reading as a child & still do! I started collecting up the books I enjoyed when I was young & building up a library for my little one.. that was about 15 years ago & my other half curses me for the piles of books everywhere! Fortunately, my little boy is getting really into books - yay! Not always the same ones I did though! As a young child, I really loved The Jolly Postman - it's great to be able to open those envelopes & really take part in the story - my little one enjoys it for the same reason. When I was about 8 or 9 I read 'The Little Vampire' by Angela Sommer-Bodenburg - I loved the fantasy element & I would get lost in the whole series. Definitely one to share with my little one when he's a bit older! So they're my nominations - 'The Jolly Postman' & 'The Little Vampire' - :) x

Portabella24 · 14/01/2016 22:13

I loved reading The Tiger Who Came To Tea by Judith Kerr as a child and then reading it to my own children.
For older children, Charlotte's Web by EB White has to be on the list.

sweir1 · 14/01/2016 22:19

they both love the gruffalo

LucyBo17 · 14/01/2016 22:37

My son absolutely loves the Gruffalo, he turns he back to us for a tickle when the purple prickles come up and growls too. My favourite story from my childhood was Only One Woof but I can't remember who by. It was a bout two sheepdog puppies and i loved it.

angiehoggett · 14/01/2016 23:21

End Blyton's - Famous Five, I loved them, and they are still going strong today!

empire11 · 15/01/2016 01:08

It would have to be The Twits, as read to me by my dad - happy memories!

jamielmdjs · 15/01/2016 02:14

The kids and i love a trilogy by a awesome little known author called Yvonne Emery, They are Xenitha ,Return to Xenitha and Xenitha the finale they are adventurous stories filled with whimsical creatures and a frightening sorceress....... Jack, Abigail and Ethan are called back to Xenitha once again. This time, although only a year has passed in their world, twenty-four years have passed in Xenitha and they are devastated to learn that some of their dear friends have in that time passed away or are now a lot older. They meet new friends, offspring's of their older friends; it is with these new friends that they embark on a new adventure to go in search of Ophelia and Keefer's son, Prince Willem, who has mysteriously disappeared, last seen with a man named Bard. As the mystery unfolds Ophelia and Keefer are angry to learn that the man named Bard is in fact the son of the late Nyklus, which Conan has kept secret from them. Although everyone is under the same idea, that Bard is as evil as his father and aunt, Conan believes that he is just misunderstood and yearns for the grandson he has been deprived of all these years. It isn't long before they discover that Bard is a metamorpher. They now have to be on their guard at all times until they enlist the help of a candor bird, the only creature that a metamorpher cannot change into. These birds are able to look deep into one's soul and see if that being is good or evil. Along the journey they meet Lanikai, the queen of the seas, who comes to their aid on more than one occasion. In this book Conan discovers a family tree and is shocked to find out the true identity of his first wife and why all the atrocities first began in Xenitha.Right i'm also off to make gillyweasel cookies (don't ask! read the first book to find out more) P.s I also got a mention in the last book....

The Grumpalump I loved reading any rhyming book to my children, including the Duck in the Truck but the Grumpalump was definitely my children's favourite

lhlee62 · 15/01/2016 20:08

Ten Little Pirates is our favourite, the story is lovely and the different things to count on each page is brilliant

Nix143 · 15/01/2016 23:02

I loved Swallows and Amazons SO much. I lost count of how many times I read it
