Unisex Pony Stories?!

1st DC due November.
We are a horsey couple and would love to make the horsey world as exciting and fun as possible. We own 1 horse but look after another two. We're there on a daily basis so obviously when DC arrives, he/she will be coming with us (not sure when, but it'll happen at some point!).

DH and I went looking for childrens books about horses and ponies but it was all about princesses and ponies... Not so good if we have a boy! Also I'm not keen on the horses being some princess-y thing... The reality really isn't like that lol.

Apart from the obvious older stories like Black Beauty or War Horse, does anyone know of any books I can read to my LO sooner? We have the tiny baby books - farm yard animals, pets etc...

Any ideas?
Thanks :)

The Sophie stories by Dick King-Smith are the only thing that jump to mind at the moment. She builds up her animal collection over the series and does get a pony at some point (can't remember exactly when). All lovely stories though, with or without pony!

Silver Snaffles? It's an old book but very good. The main protagonist is a girl (but not at all girly), but her friend at the stables is a boy and the ponies are mostly male.

Ooh i used to have loads as a kid. There was the Misty of Chincoteague or something like that about the wild island ponies on the east coast of the US. I had one on the godolphin (sp?) arabian and Henry Morgan, the man who bred Morgan horses. I also liked the Black Stallion series. I'm American though so they're more US based.

If you don't mind old fashioned, Monica Edwards has good boy characters. Black Hunting Whip has a boy central character. Antonia Forest does good boys too. But I really can't think of many others. The Silver Brumby stories perhaps?

My Friend Flicka, of course

Flambards? Possibly old initially.
Pullein Thompson (can't remember which) pony club stories have both boys and girls as main characters.
Fly by night.
