Whether it’s board games or den building, we want to hear what you get up to so we can help inspire fellow Mumsnetters for the next rainy day this summer holiday!

We absolutely love rainy days. There's so much fun to be had, whether it's indoors or outdoors. My children enjoy being outside and rain doesn't deter their enthusiasm. We pull on our wellies and waterproofs and head out to puddle jump, catch raindrops on our tongues, play hide and seek and build dens to shelter.

If we decide to stay in, we usually spend time in the kitchen baking and cooking. We often enjoy our own version of the Great British Bake Off or Masterchef. We've been doing this for some time so my children have quite a few tricks up their sleeves to try and win. I'm always the judge of course so who wouldn't enjoy pretending to be Mary Berry?!

My children have always enjoyed messy play so play dough, gloop, slime or gelli baf fun always goes down a treat on a rainy day. Finally, who can resist settling down with a good book. We love sharing stories together, taking turns to read, using different voices as well as puppets and other props to bring the story to life.

Here's a photo of our rock pets in progress - we're leaving them to dry before we add some more decoration!

(We didn't have to wait long for it to rain!)

Our best rainy day activity is baking cakes or biscuits together e.g. rock cakes or gingerbread men and then when they are ready have a teddy bears picnic with them or consume them in our inside 'table' tent.

llewejk · 05/08/2015 21:49

My 2 year old and I play hide and seek, play doh, colouring, stickers, painting, making Birthday cards for the next month, read books and puzzles.

blogmumjd · 06/08/2015 00:01

Our favourite rainy day activity is to shut the curtains to make it nice and dark to do a shadow puppet show

Abzs · 06/08/2015 00:05

My two year loves paper aeroplanes. He saw a picture of some in a book, so I made him one. For half an hour it was The Best Thing Ever.

Then we stuck our wellies on and went out anyway.

reenu · 06/08/2015 00:13

Art and craft is the main thing we do, turn cardboard boxes into cars or washing machines, coloring and reading books are other favorites, along with cooking together!

katiewalters · 06/08/2015 01:30

We dance around in the living room and We make up dance routines to our favourite songs. Sometimes it's pop music, or could be the mr tumble theme tune

newtothenet · 06/08/2015 01:33

We like to browse the charity shops, looking for toys and books that I had when I was a child.

toastyarmadillo · 06/08/2015 05:33

My DC adore potion making, you put various bowls of ingredients and let them mix them up and see what happens. Things like shaving foam, glitter, powder paint, vinegar and bicarb.

Another thing they like is indoor picnics, we make it together then build a den in the lounge and eat our picnic in it.

When I was a child I could loose hours drawing my own play scenes on sheets of paper and then playing on them with a collection of small kinder egg type toys.

Aliid004 · 06/08/2015 16:22

When it rains outside, we bring the fun indoors. Pop up tents or build your own den, making fairy cakes, puzzles and games, arts and crafts with lots of glitter ???? and the girls favourite play dough! Then we wind down with popcorn and a movie xxxx

PiaMaria79 · 06/08/2015 16:54

We have a huge box of craft material that we pull out when the weather is horrible outside, finger painting, building little castles from empty cereal boxes and toilet paper rolls and then decorating them, making our own postcards etc. We have walls filled with art made by our 3 little ones

Keeccles · 06/08/2015 17:59

We do lots of craft based activities - cutting, sticking, painting, drawing, junk modelling. I keep a box of "junk" in the kitchen with masking tape and scissors. I get a lot of craft packs from The Works, Poundland and Hobbycraft. We also enjoy making blanket dens and sharing stories together. Dressing up. Playing cafés. Indoor picnics. My little girl loves baking. But our ultimate favourite at the moment is playdough creations and especially using peanut butter playdough (1 cup peanut butter, 2 cups icing sugar, 1/2 a cup honey).

One of the more creative ideas we have is based on what I used to do as a child - which was making our own radio show on a tape (!). Now I have video readily available on the phone (as it's not the 80s!!) what I do sometimes with my daughter is pretend to make a tv show. So doing some drawings for the opening credits, performing for the show. I think as she gets bigger we can be more creative and work out a plot to act out, or make costumes and devise a theme tune. Or even stop motion animation with some characters we've made in due course

Lent1l · 06/08/2015 21:41

Baking always goes down well with both the 3 and 1 year old. Maybe a new film we've not seen. Building the tallest tower we can out of the duplo blocks. Having a carpet picnic. Painting, playdoh, colouring. Or going for a walk and jumping in puddles before coming home to a nice warm bath. Rainy days are fun

ScardyNinja · 08/08/2015 07:28

Raincoats and wells on we like to play in the summer rain if it's warm puddle jumping and running about !

mrsmortis · 08/08/2015 23:47

We have a rainy day box. My DDs birthdays are both within weeks of Christmas and they get way too much stuff. So sneak some of it into the rainy day box when they aren't looking and we get it out on rainy summer days.

we haven't needed it yet this summer though and so far the best thing we've done is made bouquets of flowers out of cupcake cases and pipe cleaners.

ButterflyOfFreedom · 09/08/2015 22:25

We have two fail safe activities for rainy days - baking & play doh!

(obviously need to ensure we don't mix them up!).

Usually baking cup cakes or making animals from play doh.
Both activities are pretty messy but that just makes it more fun!

StickChildNumberTwo · 10/08/2015 12:35

Stories, a DVD, jigsaws, occasionally we even get creative. Lots of excuses for cuddling up together.

Fleur78 · 10/08/2015 12:38

My two love playing good old fashioned games.
When it looks like the rain is going to last all day we get out the monopoly, if hopeful it might improve later on we have a quicker game of monopoly empire.
They both enjoy colouring and painting and making paper planes.
My eldest has discovered chess, battleships and even Yahtzee.
They don't appear to dislike taking the dog out whatever the weather it's more a case of me having to mop the floor and put another load in the washing machine!

eulalie1 · 10/08/2015 13:13

Pitch the tent, read books and listen to the rain falling on the tent whilst we're nice and dry!

barricade · 10/08/2015 14:22
  1. On a rainy, summer's day, board games always go down a treat, especially as an activity filler if the rain looks like it might clear up in an hour or two. The classics - Snakes & Ladders, Battleships, Connect 4, Guess Who, Scrabble - much better if you're lucky to have a range to choose from.
  2. Other 'table top' activities like colouring/painting, or jigsaw puzzles are still popular.
  3. If you have a large play room available (i.e. a large reception room converted into a play room by moving the furniture to the edges), here's a game that children will love:- 'CAPTAIN'S DECK' - One person nominated 'Captain' - he/she issues orders which the others have to follow --> e.g. "Scrub The Deck" means everyone has to crouch down and pretend they're scrubbing the floor, "Island" means everyone has to run and touch the wall, "Peg-Leg" means everyone has to stand still on one leg, "Shark" means everyone has to run to the designated 'safe zone' (could be on the sofa), "Attention On Deck" means everyone has to stand still, while saluting - can only move if the Captain states "At Ease!", etc., etc. The person who is last, or who fails to follow orders correctly, is out. Game keeps going until there is only one survivor.
  4. And if you want to just leave the kids to it, the boys will not say no to a battle-royale with their Transformers (Bratz dolls fashion show for the girls), or, dare I say it, a few family challenges on the PlayStation / Nintendo Wii!

An indoor picnic is always fun on a rainy day. Followed by hot chocolate, a dvd and cuddles. :)

Susangilley7 · 10/08/2015 17:03

My granddaughters love to play house in the Summer House at the bottom of the garden, especially if it raining!!

sjonlegs · 10/08/2015 20:02

Indoor tents, dvds, baking and when we've exhausted everything else then we bob online to see if there's any kids competitions to enter - we can usually find something related to drawing or writing!
