Updated famous five books?

My eight yr old thinks the famous five books are boring, and having recently read a couple to him, I can't blame him (used to love them when I was a kid!) someone told me that there was an author who was writing similar adventure stories, but with a more modern style/setting. Does anyone know who the author is? I don't mean the mor pc version of the original Enid Blytons!

Dd2 was given one by Helen Moss "The Mystery of the Whistling Caves" that was touted as that.
I have to say it's nothing like as well written as EB, but they're okay.

But it isn't necessarily the modern setting that's what he's looking for. You could just try different stories. My ds (7yo) doesn't particualrly like FF, but loves the aventure series. And recently he's discover the Lone Pine (Malcolm Saville) which really are dated, but he's totally hooked by them.
