Book recommendations for 9yo dd

e's an avid reader but only when she likes the book. So far she's enjoyed a few Roal Dahl, Jacqueline Wilson, David Walliams. She loves the Wimpy kid books. In general she likes those girly ones about dancing and gymnastics and ice skating and puppies and kittens. She also likes mistery stories e.

Any recommendations? Being foreign, this is something I really struggle with.... In my language i would be able to suggest well written books with beautiful stories I've also enjoyed when i was her age, but here I'm completely clueless....

Michael Morpurgo is excellent but she may be a bit young, it depends upon how sensitive your child is. A lot of his books feature death and/or war.

The Girl who Circumnavigated fairyland in a boat of her own making entranced dd (at there are 2 sequels with equally long names).

The Emily Windsnap books (half girl half mermaid) also went down well.

Some of the Eva Ibbotson books are good too.

Swallows and Amazons if you want an older beautifully written book...few in that series but some better than others.
the Dark Is Risng sequence of books by Susan Cooper is fab.

Cressida Cowell's 'How to Train your Dragon' are great for kids who like fantastical books.

Thanks everyone. I'm glad I asked about Michael Morpurgo, was about to buy a big collection from the book people, but dd is really sensitive and I prefer to avoid anything with war or deaths.

Gill Lewis is an author to keep an eye on, beautifully written novels.

Waffle Hearts is a wonderfully written story about 2 young friends.

Finding Serendipity is a lovely adventure story.

Dork Diaries (Rachel Renee Russell) and Middle School (James Patterson) series are similar to Wimpy Kid, but they aren't classics!

Lemony Snickett series.

My DD likes Dork Diaries, also Holly Webb books, Jaq Wilson also wrote some brilliant books about Foundling children. one was Emerald Star and something with Sapphire in the title? but there was about 4 and they were very good.

Second Michael Morpurgo is excellent - dd has just read Shadow, a fabulous book about a young boy coming to UK from Syria I think, but dd has read a lot of his.

Also have you tried the classics like Secret Garden and Black beauty?

Holly Webb has written loads of books, different age ranges but all nice reads I think. DD1 loves them, some are younger like Magic Molly and My Naughty Little Puppy but others are probably more for her age, Snow Bear etc. DD1 likes Maisie Hitchins but she is younger so not sure if a 9 year old would still enjoy them but worth a look (DD is 7 but a very good reader).

Gobbolino the Witches cat was a favourite of mine as a child.

Dick King Smith does lots of animal ones, Olga Da Polga is great - a guinea pig who has an adventure. His are nice because they don't involve them all dying unlike Michael Morpurgo.

Zoe's Rescue Zoo are nice - again not sure with the age though, they might be a bit young for her.

Have a look on the Book People website - they do lots of sets of books - Zoe's rescue zoo is 6 books for £6.99 I think.

the traditional Paddington chapter books are lovely and fun, she would probably enjoy them.

Goth girl by Chris Riddel is beautifully illustrated and Fortunately the Milk by Neil Gaiman is very good too.

Michael Morpurgo is good but his books are at various levels. Kensuke's Kingdom is a good one to start with.
