Just starting a new thread here as I can't spot a new one.

So my lambs feel free to keep spreading the hanes, but watch the slang!

He's a doctor so a 6th former would have got engaged to him my lamb.

Grin

Went back to Tom Tackles yesterday and finished it. It's a frustrating book. Peggy and Bride had not seen their mother for 9 years and had only been very small children the last time they had been with her. There is no way they'd have run out the door and flung themselves on her like that. They'd have been a bit shy and unsure and also nervous about leaving Madge, who had looked after them since they were toddlers, to go off and live with virtual strangers. Also, in Three Go which was set a few years later, they are still living with Madge and there is no mention of their parents having returned.
Joey, announcing that she was 'busy' again, stated very definitely that it was a good thing that Stephen was going to have a brother, as he had been the only boy for too long. This was the 1940s. There is no way that she would have known the sex of her unborn baby.
If EBD was going to write an episode out of sequence she should at least have made sure it made sense and tied in with future books.

Maybe she spun a wedding ring over her tummy/checked whether she was carrying at the front or around/had or didn't have a tickle in her throat/had cravings for cheese/any of the other nonsense people said when I was pregnant about gender prediction.

Actually, this is Joey. She just decides on the numbers of babies, genders etc., and Nature meekly obeys. She was, after all, Perhaps The Best Head Girl We've Ever Had. Natural authority will always prevail.

EatingMyWords · 14/10/2014 14:02

At least she didn't have 2 lots of twins in a year like one of the Abbey school girls (Maidie or Rosamund I think) Shock

Thebodyloveschocolateandwine · 14/10/2014 15:45

Yes all the above have niggled me too.

EDB does like her absent parents though suddenly slotting straight back into chikdrens lives, well the Bettany/Maynard parents anyway. There are problems for lesser mortals like Jessica Wayne's and prunella scales but hey Joey fixes them and it's all happy ever after. smile

Yes Joey hopes for twins and gets them so there we are. She always was a wholesale creature. The comment about steph being better for a brother is as hilarious as her sayin it's high time Rix and Jackie were amongst boys

Also felix is all boy and can't just be satisfied with Felicity or my real favourite steve my lamb is far to busy to write to you when Len complains to her. Busy doing what? Presumably important boy stuff! confused*

Thebodyloveschocolateandwine · 14/10/2014 15:46

Sorry about buggering up links.

Thebodyloveschocolateandwine · 14/10/2014 15:50

Eating sounds bloody awful.

Mollie Maynard had a baby on Boxing Day and another one on New Year's Day in the same year. Grin

DeWee · 14/10/2014 15:55

I've not read Tom yet. Must get round to it.

The thing about it always being twins/the gender she wants irritates me too.
I've half a feeling someone perhaps one of the Lucy/Chester clan or one of the old girls, she expects to be disappointed with whichever they've got. I think Joey asks the doctor telling her and says "Is she disappointed?" and he says something along the lines of "Go round a judge for yourself." I think he says something that implies they're not disappointed as well, but really can't remember beynd that.

I do like the hint we have in a later book that Maeve isn't too hapy about finding they're the youngest in the family as Peggy's been bossing them about during the holidays. That's quite realistic.

NellWilsonsWhiteHair · 14/10/2014 18:53

I love that "or my name's not Miles Barras" line. Makes me snort every time.

I thought exactly the same thing about Jo deciding she shall bring forth a son, and doing so. I forget which book (maybe Trials) but she does the same cosmic order-placing with the second set of twins, too. I'm not sure it is an EBDism though - or in the case of Dick and Mollie I think the EBDism is in Three Go - wasn't Tom published first?
I also grin wryly the bit in Reunion where Jo says she'd like another daughter (is not even upduffed at this point) and Grizel says "!!! You're not a feminist are you?"

She always was a wholesale creature!

NellWilsonsWhiteHair · 14/10/2014 21:42

Oh and I saw a boat called Thekla yesterday!

UniS · 14/10/2014 23:18

Of course, the boat , Thats why the name seemed familiar.

Thebodyloveschocolateandwine · 15/10/2014 01:14

Was the boat a Prussian?

Oh yes the feminist accusation. From Grizel of all people who bloody well would have been a feminist as she had backbone.

I never really understood why Joey would write a mail about having a fourth son before she had him and then insisted it was mailed without adding she had a dd too. Why? Attention seeking behaviour. Grin

or my names not miles Barras he flounces.

Actually he's a nasty piece and I remember as a kid thinking how horrible he was to smack Tony so hard he couldn't sit down for days..and I am a 70s kid so was regularly smacked.Confused

Thebodyloveschocolateandwine · 15/10/2014 01:17

Wasn't It also Hilary who wanted a boy first but got a girl?

Obviously only Joey can order the sex.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 15/10/2014 10:56

Right, my lovelies, have made a start on transcribing Jo To The Rescue. So far I'm halfway down page 1. Grin Was interrupted by MiniCheddar who did not feel like being dumped in his bouncer and ignored. He is not a true Chaletian baby, who would be trained to obedience at the tender age of 3 months. even if he does have an EBD name, from the La Rochelle series rather than CS

Thebodyloveschocolateandwine · 15/10/2014 11:45

Barney?

Thebodyloveschocolateandwine · 15/10/2014 12:49

Or You didn't call him bad Bill did u? Grin

morningtoncrescent62 · 15/10/2014 13:04

Julian Cheddar has a nice ring to it.

NellWilsonsWhiteHair · 15/10/2014 14:10

Hah! Bad Bill was my first thought too. Never mind instant obedience/never bothering the mother even if suffering acute appendicitis, Cheddar my lamb, you need a coadjutor.

Agreed thebody on Barras. Nasty bloke. And another who drags his family hither and thither each time he needs to replenish his artistic inspiration, ugh.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 15/10/2014 16:03

Nope! He's more of a Scamp than a Bad Bill. Wink

morningtoncrescent62 · 15/10/2014 17:03

Reginald Cheddar. Very nice on toast.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 15/10/2014 17:08

Sad to say we skipped Reginald and went with Rex, despite my loudly stated previous intentions of not using a short instead of a full name. Blush Consistency is the defence of small minds.

IrenetheQuaint · 15/10/2014 19:40

I'm disappointed, I hoped you were going to say he was a Nigel.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 15/10/2014 20:32

Nigel, ick!

Pop quiz: what is the name of the holiday house Jo, Marie, Frieda and Simone stay in during Jo to the Rescue? (Hint: this is a trick question)

TheObligatoryNotQuiteSoNewGirl · 15/10/2014 22:29

No idea! Because it's now the only CS book I've never read :-(

So quickly train MiniCheddar to instant obedience so you can get on with the transcript Wink

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 15/10/2014 22:37

Am working on it!
