Welome everyone. Dormy lists on the board as usual and I know you are all hoping like mad that you are all not in the same dormitory as Mary Lou. But only some of you can be the un lucky ones and the rest of us will have to make do with each other.

Oh, and the good news is that Joey has sabotaged discovered something wrong with the roof on her house and believe it or not, the only property available to rent is right next door to the school.

Shit Hurrah, lucky us.

Got to go. Matey wants me for unpacking.

"This time you have to have Joey's makeover without complaining."

Now that really is pushing us into the horrible modern real world! Grin

Vintagejazz · 18/08/2014 19:47

A Joey Makeover Shock Shock

Quick DeWee, I need one of your cakes!

OP posts:
hels71 · 18/08/2014 20:21

Oh no, I think cakes will not do it.....we need special milk....

NellWilsonsWhiteHair · 18/08/2014 20:36

And Joan's gin. I shall cut off my own hair immediately, Simone-style, to render earphones impossible.

I'm still undecided about CGGU. FOMO and desire to discuss it on here vs fear of irrevocably removing my rose-tinted spectacles, with added aversion to anything involving dead!Bill.

hels71 · 18/08/2014 20:47

I read CGGU and really disliked it.............it seemed to me it was written by someone who hated the CS and just wanted to ruin it.

mopsytop · 18/08/2014 20:56

I don't thing I can go down the CGGU path...

DeWee · 18/08/2014 21:03

Secretly hands Vintage cakes before slipping out of the window.

Funny I thought these evenings were always accompanied by full scale laughter... there seems to be an eerie silence so far...

Vintagejazz · 18/08/2014 21:14

Thanks DeWee, hope you got down that drainpipe ok. Mary Lou is on the prowl but we told her there were some Juniors being chased by pigs in the lower meadow so you should have time to slip back into weedy dorm before she catches you.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 18/08/2014 21:22

Have bought CGGU on Amazon. Will report back when I've read it!

hels71 · 18/08/2014 21:25

Let's hope it IS hydrochloric acid and not just distilled water. I really hope one of the 6th has been enjoying Joan's gin and been very careless!!!

SignYourName · 18/08/2014 21:27

I'm a coward and an avoider when it comes to CGGU. Despite Exile with its outbreak of war background being my favourite CS book, I don't want my cosy escapism ruined and hels, you're not the first person I've seen to make a "written by someone who hated the CS and wanted to spoil it"-type comment, which puts me right off.

NellWilsonsWhiteHair · 18/08/2014 22:03

I read a review of CGGU which posited that the author probably had a complicated love-hate relationship with the series, and that made sense to me. I suppose in some ways I also do - and some of those ways seem eminently compatible (daggers out for OOAO etc) but I'm not sure if I would get on with the places where what I think really clashes with the CGGU interpretation. I wait with bated breath for your verdict, Cheddar.

I don't know that I can honestly say I think (from what I hear) it's any worse than eg some of Jo's bereavement advice, or the way Madge is ruined within EBD's own work. But I'm still hesitant, I suppose partly because I'm forewarned.

I cheeked Mary-Lou and promptly got myself sent to do mending with Matron instead of attending the makeovers tonight. Devastated to miss it, naturally.

Vintagejazz · 18/08/2014 22:21

I've been given kenswigses and lime green eye shadow Sad.

Has anyone checked if the sumerhouse is still locked? I could do with some gin time to think.

Vintagejazz · 18/08/2014 22:23

I agree re the ruination of Madge. She started out as the instigator of the series and a really strong character, and ended up as a fragile person wrapped in shawls operating a nursery for her relatives' waifs and strays.

OP posts:
Thebodyloveschocolateandwine · 18/08/2014 22:30

Can't belive true chaletians havnt read the dreaded CGGU.

It's like the chalet school written by Thekla/Betty Wynne Davis/Miss Bubb/ Frau Berlin and Matron Besley. Grin

You really must and then report back here.

I don't think she hated the series just massively irritated with it and wanting to develop the characters.

Not Always nicely either.

Thebodyloveschocolateandwine · 18/08/2014 22:39

Totally agree with the Madge thing.

Love Madge and hate the way she's sidlined!

And not invited to the reunion really bitchy that.

vintage suprised at you messing up your skin like that with makeup! Are you Dorcas brownlows sister Eunice?
Shame on you.

Vintagejazz · 18/08/2014 22:44

It was Joey's makeover. She told me there is nothing like a bit of lime green to make a girl look attractive in a healthy, innocent, doctor-snagging kind of way.

OP posts:
Vintagejazz · 18/08/2014 23:10

That was doctor SNAGGING by the way, for any of you with a Joan Baker turn of mind.

OP posts:
EatingMyWords · 18/08/2014 23:48

It's ages since I read CGGU but I think it just made me laugh. I am very good at suspending disbelief when I'm reading though. I still quite like Joey even as grown up and think Madge is a bit boring even in the earlier books so I think I read them as if I were still a child and quieten my inner critic Grin

I don't know- doctor-snagging sounds pretty rude to me!

Thebodyloveschocolateandwine · 19/08/2014 00:42

I couldn't snag a doctor in my hey day! Bollicks

NellWilsonsWhiteHair · 19/08/2014 06:41

Doctor-snagging doesn't sound like something nice Chalet girls would do. Your kenwigses and healthy-looking lime green eyeshadow sounds like a topping look though Vintage.

MsCeritaCello · 19/08/2014 09:46

I read CCGU what seems like decades ago, long before fanfic took off. I liked it at the time, but I think it may have been a liking borne out of desperation to read something - anything - to do with the Chalet School! Now, between all the published fillers, sequels and prequels, and infinitely more than I have time to read easily available online, I don't think I would relate to it in quite the same way. Perhaps I should read it again to find out!

Thebody, I'm sure if you lay off the chocolate and wine and instead indulge in all the bread twists, kartofflen, coffee with featherbeds of whipped cream, lemon biscuits and delicately honeyed pastries you can find, you will find doctors beating a path to your door. Because as we all know, those things are entirely calorie-free and who knows, endowed with some aphrodisiac powers irresistable to doctors. But don't, whatever you do, have any shop-bought cake. That will attract entirely the wrong sort of man. The kind without a medical degree.

NellWilsonsWhiteHair · 19/08/2014 09:59

I bet Vic Coles wouldn't randomly sedate his wife, though.

Vintagejazz · 19/08/2014 12:28

Shakes kenswigses in sexy fashion and bats lime green lidded eyes.

OP posts:
DeWee · 19/08/2014 13:43

You all look beautiful... I have got on my sunglasses to avoid the lime green though.

I flicked through CGGU in a charity shop once. I didn't buy it, it read like a fan fiction, not even a particularly good one. And although a lot of the things are things we've joked about, it's not done in a loving way, more a gleeful watching a car-crash sort of way. You don't get the feeling that the author liked the characters she was writing about.
