Welome everyone. Dormy lists on the board as usual and I know you are all hoping like mad that you are all not in the same dormitory as Mary Lou. But only some of you can be the un lucky ones and the rest of us will have to make do with each other.

Oh, and the good news is that Joey has sabotaged discovered something wrong with the roof on her house and believe it or not, the only property available to rent is right next door to the school.

Shit Hurrah, lucky us.

Got to go. Matey wants me for unpacking.

I did Humphrey Clinker for O level. It was boooring and not remotely risqué (unless I nodded off). I do remember giggling in round-the-class-reading in the soppy bits of The Prisoner of Zenda.
Wiki says the young lovers in the Blue Lagoon were cousins, but I am sure that is not what my mum (who was called Joyce btw) said. Hmm

NellWilsonsWhiteHair · 24/09/2014 13:25

I was reminded the other day that I did The Color Purple at GCSE - I am v grateful for this but also trying to imagine how it might have been met with at the CS!

I'm wondering if I'll get beyond Gay from China in my current (first-ever in order!) read-through - I have a massive drop in love thereafter. I may make it as far as Barbara before skipping titles or going back to the beginning, I guess. I'm about to start Jo Returns now...

Can we do 'choose your top five'? I think I would say

  1. Gay from China
  2. Exile
  3. Goes To It
  4. Camp
  5. Lintons

... V hard to not have School At or Exploits in there, though.

RueDeWakening · 24/09/2014 13:59

So...my top five:
Exile
Goes To It
Gay from China
New Mistress
Jo of (for the Christmas with the Mensches)

And in other news, I've just uploaded Genius to the drive, :o :o please can some of you have a look at it and shout if you can't access it/you spot any problems? I can see it in my iBooks fine, but don't have anything else to test it on! (It's not got a contents page currently, it did have and I don't know where it's gone, I'm working on that...)

DeWee · 24/09/2014 14:39

I thought Blue Lagoon were brother/sister. But I haven't read it, I saw the first half of the film. Just got to the point when they became adults and dm came in and switched it off. Sad And everyone else at school was talking about it-specifically the adult bits-the next day.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 24/09/2014 15:34

Oooh, well done you, Rue! I can see it on the OneDrive but have forgotten how to download epub files so I'm not getting very far. Blush Somebody else please have a go.

Top 5:

  1. Gay From China
  2. Eustacia
  3. Rivals
  4. Head Girl
  5. New Mistress

I think! I think Exile ought to be in there somewhere...and I do love Redheads for its sheer craziness.

NellWilsonsWhiteHair · 24/09/2014 16:44

Rue you perfect poppet thank you! I've just tried and it works perfectly. Cover illustration and everything!

EmilyAlice · 24/09/2014 17:05

I have had some topping books from the fabulous library pree, but I don't know how to find the one drive? Can somebody help a poor old dear (prob older than Mary-Lou's granny who is the only old lady character I can think of).....

Thebodyloveschocolateandwine · 24/09/2014 17:12

Yes and I like Joey bloody cheek when she wants to spank Naomi Elton for being the cause of Herr Launach ( can't spell) leaving!

Joey was far ruder to him.

She just fell over and was disabled. He should have gone years ago.

Nice they had miss Yolland as she's a poppet.

Vintagejazz · 24/09/2014 17:13

Can someone remind me of the new password for the shared drive?

Thanks

I can't do a top 5. Too many favourites.

Vintagejazz · 24/09/2014 17:15

Oh and we don't mention my limegreen makeover Nell Blush

JustSoTiredAndSad · 24/09/2014 17:15

I can't open Genius SadSadSad

Rue could you possibly email me a copy pleeeeeeeeeeeease?

Vintagejazz · 24/09/2014 17:16

There's so many I still have to re-read that I can't do a proper top 5 yet. But definitely Exile and Goes To It would be there. I remember as a child Three Go was my favourite and I still think it's one of the best. I doubt any of the Swiss ones would feature although Problem gives an interesting perspective and I'm about to re-read New Mistress.

I can't open it either. Does anyone know how to make e pub files open on a smart phone?

Vintagejazz · 24/09/2014 17:22

And I am really starting to feel my age on this thread. Nell and Cheddar you are just kids!

Vintagejazz · 24/09/2014 17:23

In fact I thought the Chalet Books were out of print (and fashion) by the 1990s.

hels71 · 24/09/2014 17:45

When I started uni in 1989 they were reprinting lots of the later ones in paperback. I bought Theodora with my first grant cheque and haunted Smiths for the next few years buying whatever came out for my "niece"....

NellWilsonsWhiteHair · 24/09/2014 17:47

No no no! Armada were still putting them out - my first copy looked like this. Definitely out of fashion, mind. My CS reading was a dirty little secret even in my childhood...

Emily my lamb don't forget Grandma Learoyd in Gay ! She is old and excellent, too.

EmilyAlice · 24/09/2014 17:53

Oh yes I had forgotten her. Will practise the accent.
(The trouble is in my head I am still wearing a mini-skirt and out on the barricades of 1968).

RueDeWakening · 24/09/2014 18:13

If you want an email of it pm me the addy to send it to, I'll do that after Brownie collection this evening.

And turn it into a .mobi as well so non-iThing people can open it!

TheObligatoryNotQuiteSoNewGirl · 24/09/2014 18:19

I won't tell anyone that I wasn't even born in 1992, then...

RueDeWakening · 24/09/2014 18:58

Right, .mobi version should be there now, too. That will work on kindles and stuff like that. I think...

Password is: IAmOOAOMaryLou

Thebodyloveschocolateandwine · 24/09/2014 19:02

vintage my lamb don't worry I thought Nell was older!

She must have definatly gone to the chalet school as those stay in the middle thirties when they are clearly in the middle fourties. Grin

I loved 3 go too.

Emily Was that the old peppery lady from the train with the big family moving to Howells village.

If so she's a Rebecca and That's a nice name.

hels71 · 24/09/2014 19:03

How does one make things get to a kindle???? (total techno useless person here....)

RueDeWakening · 24/09/2014 19:03

I forgot! Mid-1990s as a university student I was buying Armada copies of Jo to the Rescue, Prefects, Adrienne, Two Sams, Redheads, Joey & Co, Reunion etc, I think they were just getting round to publishing a lot of the Swiss books and some of the odd not-school based ones. They all had <a class="break-all" href="http://www.abebooks.co.uk/servlet/FrameBase?content=/en/imagegallery/imagegallery.shtml?images=pictures.abebooks.com/TERRAAUSTRALISBOOKS/233563226.jpg" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">this sort of cover.
