Ds1 is 5 and lacks confidence and is often unwilling to try new things or gives up very easily if things don't go his way.
All pretty typical behaviour for his age but are there any books we could read together to reinforce the view that success doesn't just fall in your lap without practice!

Tennis Shoes by Noel Streatfield is more of a girls' book, but very much about not giving up. It may be out of print, but I would suspect you could find it on ebay.
It is a chapter book, but if you're reading it together then it should be fine.

Have a look at the picture book The Yes - it may well be the type of thing you are looking for. It's all about pushing aside those niggling 'no you can't do it' thoughts. Brilliantly written.

Little spider's first web is exactly what you need. A lovely book.

Break out the old Thomas films? "Never never never give up, even though you're out of puff..." (on repeat for hours)

Actually I think I might start singing that chirpily to my 5 year old when he's being a grump Grin it will wind him up something lovely! Payback for when he made me listen to it all day everyday!

Thank you, some lovely suggestions to try.
Just had village games today (all for fun, egg and spoon, sack race etc.) which he refused to take part in in case he lost. Breaks my heart and infuriates me all at the same time!
