A friends son is really struggling to cope with the fact that his Dad has walked out of the family home. He has developed a fascination with father-son bonds (in other families) and i wanted to find a fiction book with a strong thread to show that his Dad does still love him and will not abandon him (even though he hardly sees him).

What about something by Frank Cottrell Boyce or Roald Dahl? I can't think of any that specifically address fathers leaving but they both have complicated or lovely father/son relationships.

Dear Mr Henshaw, by Beverly Cleary is about a boy who writes to an author and discusses his parents' divorce, among other things. It won the Newbury award.

Dear Mr Henshaw

I gave the us amazon link so you can see reviews. I think there are a lot of American books that deal with this.
