Books for 11 year old boy

Hi - any recommendations for an 11 year old boy? My DS used to be a very reluctant reader - but finally getting into it. I am keen to encourage him with new book ideas. I find that there are too many "horrid Henry" and "wimpy kid" type books - that don't stretch him. He has read and liked Roald Dahl, Michael Morpugo. Harry potter. He prefers real life type stories versus fantasy. Any ideas ?

Have you tried Jules Verne? My DS1 refused to even open one, till they did a swap at school and he gave wimpy kid and received a Jules Verne. He discovered a new world, but he did take a friend to reach it!

Thanks gordonpym I'll check out Jules Verne.

My twelve year old is also reluctant to read but he does really like the young James Bond books by Charlie Higson, and of course the latest Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan.

He recently read the secret diary of Adrian Mole and loved it, although he didn't like the second one so much.

This is one book he truly loved. When I gave it him, he snorted and told "I won't like, I already know it". But he couldn't put it down and read it in 2 days. He even read some parts to me.
Because of mr. Terupt by Rob Buyea amazon

Gordonpym - yes my DS loved that one too. There is a sequel that he also really liked.

Synilvimes - someone else recommended Adrian mole - I think I read it as a kid ... But my DS is 10 and was worried it might not be age appropriate?

the Mortal Chaos books by Matt Dickinson are excellent for reluctant readers. the chapters are short but the story in good, interesting and action packed. and they are real life.

What about the Alex Rider books? They're like James Bond for kids!

My 10 year old has just starting enjoy books by himself and is suddenly flying through books at an amazing rate after not being bothered with them at all.

We are struggling to find him books he likes, he's done Roald Dahl and now just started Harry Potter.

One he got a Xmas and said it was the best book he had read so far is an old one "Stig of the Dump".

my 11 year old loves:

percy jackson series.
skulduggery pleasant by derek landy series.
the young james bond series mentioned.
my family and other animals by gerald durrell.
books by Oisin McGann.
The Hobbit.
The series of unfortunate events books.

These are the ones which spring to mind.....

Many of the boys in my DS's year (6) are addicted to the Robert Muchamore 'Cherub' series. Also, Gareth P Jones's book, The Considine Curse, went down very well at his school book club last year.

Re Adrian Mole - My 10 year old DS has read the first two and I think has re-read the first; he thought they were hilarious. I'm quite relaxed about what he reads, having been an avid reader who devoured my parents' bookshelves. I adored Stephen King at 11 - I couldn't get enough of his books.

There are some good suggestions on the book threads here by bookshops local to me.

My Side of the Mountain - Jean Craighead George

Hatchet - Gary Paulsen

Loved these books as a child, real life, adventure type stories, featuring boys as strong main characters.

The Arthur Trilogy by Kevin Crossley-Holland

Seeline · 23/01/2014 13:09

Percy Jackson (also Heroes of Olympus series by same author)
Alex Rider
Artemis Fowl
Power of Five series, and Kane series (can't remember who they are by - sorry)
Young James Bond, and the 'zombie' series by the same author
David Walliams books
You may want to check out the 'Cherub' series before you hand over to DS - cover adult themes and language
