If ds loves diary of a wimpy kid, Astrosaurs, horrid Henry, what else will he enjoy?

He is 7 but has a reading age of 10. He has read the first 4 Harry Potters and a couple of Percy Jackson books but we are finding while he can read the words and understand the plot the subject matter is too grown up. He got terribly upset about Professor Umbridge's cruelty to Harry for example. So he's now reading more age appropriate books like Horrid Henry and Astrosaurs but because they are easy to read is going through a book a week.
So I need more ideas please. We've done the 3 in the title to death and I'm not sure where to go next. ( beast quest no good btw, the front covers scare him so he won't even try them).

Norm. The world of norm? Something like that

Bradsplit · 19/11/2013 06:48

Emil and the detectives. Polly and the stupid wolf.

Bradsplit · 19/11/2013 06:51

The David Williams.

Some like dahl. I find him creepy

shoppingbagsundereyes · 19/11/2013 06:56

He's read all of Dahl except the autobiographies - got too upset when he got caned for a sweet shop prank. As you can see gets easily upset. Think he has my over empathy thing, I cry at anything.
Haven't heard of the Norm thing, will investigate. Forgot all about Emil, think he would like that as enjoyed Tintin. Wonder if Arthur Ransome stuff is too hard/too outdated? I loved Swallows and Amazons when I was younger, but can't remember how young I was.

My Ds likes Tom Gates books

shoppingbagsundereyes · 19/11/2013 07:01

Justaweeone, I've just ordered one of those for him to try. Good to hear it might go down well. I think it's the cartoony style he likes about wimpy kid - is mad on drawing his own comics at the moment- so hopefully that will go down well.

SecondingTom Gates.

MirandaWest · 19/11/2013 07:10

DS thinks Tom Gates is better than Wimpy Kid (think I agree with him). He also likes the Norm books and books by David Walliams.

Graceparkhill · 19/11/2013 07:11

Flat Stanley was a big hit with my two at that age. Also Tin Tin and Asterix.

strawberrypenguin · 19/11/2013 07:13

Beast quest (series) by Adam Blade
Anything by Jeremy Strong

Allice · 19/11/2013 07:14

They might be slightly young for him but we love the Mr Gum books, they're ridiculous and hilarious, think I like them better than the kids do.
WH Smith have a set of 2 for £5 at the moment.

Ds liked the captain underpants books by dav pilkey.

Bradsplit · 19/11/2013 07:23

youll find ransome outdated and he is too young too I think

Don't rush into older books - its not just understanding the text, its the imaginative legacy they leave as you saw with the Dahl ones.

DottyDot · 19/11/2013 07:26

Definitely Tom Gates - brilliant!

Bradsplit · 19/11/2013 07:26

Ooh and lemony snickett? Ds's loved me reading these to them at that age and there are 13 in the series which is good news if you need a good run of books.
