Calling those with 4-6 year olds...roughly!

My dd (just 4) has informed me that her books are boring and babyish..I must admit she hasn't had new ones for a while. She currently has lots of Julia Donaldson style (gruffalo, room on the broom etc) which she loved but has grown out of. I have bought a couple of Roald Dahl (Georges Marvellous Medicine and Fantastic Mr. Fox ) for us to do a chapter at a time but think these are actually a bit old for her. So can anyone tell me...are they too old? and any recommendations for her? Thanks.

The owl who was afraid of the the dark. There are others in the series, but not as good, IMO, although dd also liked the Cat who wanted to go home.

We have just finished reading Little house in the big woods, by Laura Ingalls Wilder, have never seen Dd so gripped. Even the two year old was lying still, listening.

Get The Twits. I don't know any children who don't love that - a good 'entry level' Dahl.
We read the books you've bought with DD at a similar age and she loved them, but it took her a while longer to read them by herself.
Bit of retro charm - Teddy Robinson, Winnie the Pooh.
Shirley Hughes stories and poems are super.
I'm not a huge fan, but the Mr Men/Little Miss books are a nice easy size/quantity of words for solo reading at a young age.
My DD is a bit older (6) and has just read Mr Gum. Rude and she loved it.

My DDs loved Milly-Molly-Mandy at that age and I second The Owl WHo Was Afraid of The Dark.

Little House in the Big Woods was great for them although sensitive-DD1 did have a few bad dreams about the panther story afterwards.

The Sophie series by Dick King-Smith has been a hit.

They LOVE My Naughty Little Sister and Teddy Robinson, old-fashioned though they both are.

The Giraffe, The Pelly and Me is a great starter for ROald Dahl.

I found that if the protagonist was more or less their age, then they loved it.

They like to listen to 'The Naughtiest Girl in the School', have NO interest in Roald Dahl at all. They like Winnie the Witch, The Lighthouse Keeper by Ronda Armitage, Katie Morag, Katie in the Art Gallery books by James Mayhew, Percy the Park Keeper, Milly Molly Mandy, Mr Benn, Paddington, Rainbow Fairies, Holly Webb books

The Day the Crayons Quit is fantastic - we have just got that one.

will have a think of more.

DD absolutely loves the 'Bake a Wish' books, Princess Poppy, Princess Evie's Ponies, Magic faraway tree and any Roald Dahl.

forgot the Laura's Star books by Klaus Baumgart, they are lovely.

Iggy and Me is also good

Dr Seuss and the Mog books are popular with DD at the minute.

Janet Reachfar books (I think there are 3) are popular with DS1 (just 6).

Winnie the Witch and Katie Morag have been popular for a good 18 months.

Now getting into Roald Dahl (starting with The Giraffe, The Pelly & Me, and he has read The Magic Finger himself several times).

Cinderellla's Bum is brilliant.

My daughter really enjoyed all the Roald Dahl books, the Magic Far Away Tree, Worst Witch books.

We generally do a picture book at bedtime followed by a chapter from a longer book.

She also enjoys listening to longer stories in the car, we have borrowed story CDs from the library and they have given us an idea what kind of things she likes.

My 4 year old loves the naughty little sister stories

We are currently reading James and the giant peach to ds4(5) at bedtime, before that it was the bfg, have done the twits and charlie and the chocolate factory.

We make sure to talk over what has happened so far briefly before we read the next bit.

The giggler treatment by Roddy Doyle is a firm favorite and stuff by Shirley Hughes, dogger, the cement mixer.

Dr Seuss, the Mr men books which I hate...
