Winnie the Pooh

I feel like a complete philistine but I have never read these myself. I want to get one for Christmas for DD 4, which would you recommend?

I heard some dark tale that Disney bought them and have embedded Disnified versions into bookshops when you think you are buying the originals.

There are actually only two Winnie the Pooh books. Winnie the Pooh and The House at Pooh corner. Then there are a couple of poem ones.

There's a more recent sequel written with the approval of the estate, can't remember the name now.

Everything else is Disney cartoon stuff.

We have a nice boxed set with the originals (as Amanda says) and the poem books (When we were young, and now we are six). Look at the illustrations to check they're the originals, they're less cartoony than the Disney versions, although our version has coloured the pictures quite nicely.

I always found the stories surprisingly long and complicated for what I remembered them though, so it depends on your dd whether she is ready for them. Ds has just discovered them and is enjoying them-he's 6 and a very good reader. (Little house books type of thing)

thanks all, that's just what I needed to know. Was thinking of asking Santa to bring them, but maybe she is a little young

I think it depends on your child. DD1 is 4 and a half and she's had them for the last six months. She loves them being read to her and it has introduced her to the idea of a story running over multiple nights.
