Book about a poor British family, title a bit like 'Cannery Row' but not

This is driving me nuts, we read it at school (Year 7) and I've always thought it was called Cannery Row. I've just read Steinbeck's Cannery Row and of course it's not the same book at all!
Anyway, this family had a few kids, think the eldest boy was called Val, the clever daughter passed her 11+ and they were hard-pushed to pay for her school uniform, mum has an operation and somebody knits her a bedjacket, they go to a travelling fair.
Any ideas?

The Family from One End Street? (tho I don't remember a travelling fair...)

I have all of them. They are wonderful and worth reading as an adult.

THANK YOU! Cannot think why I decided it was Cannery Row which is very good too but mostly about hopelessly alcoholic Latinos in California and their very silly antics Confused.

Theres a few books in the One End Street series. Apparently, they were the first childrens books to portray a working class family.

Isn't there a fair when they go in the uncles (?) horse drawn wagon. I'll have to read them all now!
