Getting a children's story published

I wrote a short children's story for pre school age. Does anyone have any ideas about getting it published?

Hi, I?m not sure if this is completely right but have been told by a friend a few years back that your best bet to get published by a large company like Random House or HarperCollins is to sign up with a literary agent. As if you don?t and just send them to publishing houses instead, it?ll just get put into a huge pile and won?t be taken as seriously. Literary agents are your best bet with getting published as they?ll apply to publishing houses for you and use their contacts.

Hi, Sonya L80 is right. Few publishers these days will consider books that haven't come to them from an agent. It's a good idea to look at the books in your local library or bookshop to see which publishers are publishing the same sort of book as yours. Then consult the Writers and Artists Yearbook (which might well also be in your local library) to find out if you can submit your work directly to any of them. The Writers and Artists Yearbook also lists agents and will tell you which ones specialise in children's books. Good luck!

Writing stories for children is a wonderful thing and the Storyteller is in all of Us! Getting Published is very very hard! Literary Agents are not (a) that easy to find and make contact with even in Writers & Artists Yearbook or at the Book Fairs (b) few if any accept unsolicited work! Many writers starting out these days are now taking the self-publishing route, either as a hard cover book (expensive) or as an ebook because of this and are putting their work up on Amazon,and doing a webpage etc. I have been writing childrens stories for a long time and have found the classroom a great place to judge how the children will receive your work! Children are very forthright and tell you straight! Always worth checking before you begin the hard work of following your Dream! If the children say - Okay! Off you go! There are some great ways to publish as ebooks and there are good formats set up to do this. Worth the research. As I said its hard but if its what you want to do - then follow your Dream. We only fail when we stop trying to succeed! I wish you the very best of Luck!
