Book recommendations for 4 year old DD please

DD loves reading with me, her favourie author is Julia Donaldson (DDs favourite of her books is The Princess and the Wizard) but I would like her to read some books by other people.

Can anyone recommend any other good books for us to read together? or any she might be able to read on her own? She recognises quite a few frequently used words and is getting good at sounding out short words, she hasn't started school yet so I have no idea what reading level that is.

My DD is 3.5 and loves books too. Also a big JD fan, but as we've got everything she's ever written we've had to branch out too!!

My DD loves Angelina Ballerina books (can't read yet but will sit and recite it to herself!) also the Belle & Boo books. Mr Peek was bought for her and although I think it's a bit daft DD loves it.

Sounds like your DD is probably ahead of expected reading level for her age. If she's really in to learning to read then Usborne have some v good starter books.

They've got a lot going on and the language is about the right level for kids to have a go too. These are true classics from when we were kids and the daft characters and busy pictures seem to work as well now as they always have.

She will probably start bringing reading books home once she starts school - otherwise try ordering in books for her at the library. You are looking for pink level (old level 1l, or possibly red level(2). The songbirds books are good - dig dig dig, top cat. Although you can buy them (and I have a fair few), generally you need quite a few so that you know that they aren't just learning the word order but are actually reading them. Also they can move up quite quickly and once she is in school she might bring home a few books each week and go up through the levels.

Picture books are great and she might be able to spot a few words in them, but generally they need a fairly good reading ability to be able to read them. With my girls I have found that by the time they are able to read them they want different types of books.

With ds he reads one of his easy books to me a night and I read 2/3 picture books to him. Most important thing is that she enjoys it and listening to you read to her.

Bunny and Bee taught dd2 to read when she was quite small. They're repetitive and rhyming, so very easy for them to pick up all the words. Noisy Night was her favourite:

"Here is a house, a house in a tree.
The house is the home of Bunny and Bee"

Also mine at age 3-4 loved the Ladybird Jane and Peter set. Absolutely loved them. I think because they very quickly could read whole books on their own.

Milly Molly Mandy books are antiquated but very engaging and dd loved them.

Ditto the Naughty Little Sister books, which dd also loved and ds now does too.

Anna Hibiscus is also worth a read,

And I always say this, but it is really funny and our family loves it, Colin and the Curly Claw by Jan Fearnley.

Oh, and the Witch's Dog books are good too. By Frank Rodgers.

My dd loves the fairy tale hairdresser by abie longstaff, looking on amazon she's written quite a few, I'm tempted to get a few more!

Marian, I loved Milly Molly Mandy books when I was little, I can't believe I forgot about them!

My dd age 4 loves the princess and the peaS , Shirley Hughes 'dogger 'and other stories, Winnie the witch, jolly postman, handa's surprise , dr Seuss , milo armadillo and anything to do with fairies!

Nearly forgot - the Katie morag stories!

DD1 is also 4.

I'd like to buy a book for girls of about this age that fight against the passive/princess model for women. Does anyone know which of these books have women doing things rather than just waiting for a prince to rescue them?
