American Girl books

This piece in The Guardian has just reminded me about American Girl books, which I loved as a child. We lived in America at the time - were they popular over here? Has anyone read them recently and can recommend any? I really remember one where the girl had to stay at the table to eat her swede, think it was set in war time. My daughter is 6.5 - is she too young?

Thanks!

Oh and I really, really wanted one of those dolls mentioned in the article! I used to just go and stare longingly at them in the toy shop. They were very expensive though.

They are aimed at 8+. My daughters have both dolls & books despite now being in secondary school. The historical dolls & their connected books are really good. I also like their books on homework, friendship & growing up, but they are definitely for older girls. The one on puberty is very good, I got it from Amazon.
