Night time reading with 7 yr old

Need some recommendations for good books to read with DD at night. Teacher says parent should still keep reading to DD at bedtime. Thought this was for when they were toddlers only, so all our books are for little ones. Need to update our library. Any recommendations greatly received. Thanks.

How old is your DD and what was the last book she enjoyed?

I picked books I had enjoyed as a child and read those too,re-reading children's books is one of my favourite perks of being a parent!

What sort of things does she like?

Roald Dahl? My 7 year old loves Secret Seven.

All the books they like to read but maybe a stage or two ahead of them.

I'm currently reading DS Black Beauty. If I'm honest, it's a little advanced for him but I'm loving it

At 7 mine loved Roald Dahl and Paddington Bear.

DD is 7 and is currently enjoying Pippi Longstocking. Like neveronsunday I tend to read things to her that she isn't quite able to read on her own yet. She loves anything by Dick King Smith, but often reads them herself now.

I think the Princess Mirrorbelle books by Julia Donaldson are really good. There are three in the series and ideally you want to read them in order.

I second the suggestion of the Faraway Tree books and would also suggest the Wishing Chair books (both by Enid Blyton).

Horrid Henry books?

Well thank you all, there are some really good suggestions here. The last one I read to DD was Dr Dog, Burglar Bill and the old classics such as Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella and Rapunzel. A friend gave us some of her DD's old books, but I think they are too old for DD (Cookie, Lola Rose and Kiss by Jacqueline Wilson). I was in a quandary at where to pitch age appropriate books for DD's age, so these recommendations are a real good start. Thanks heaps!

I recently read Charlotte's Web and Nina and the Travelling Spice Shed to my 7-year-old DD and they both went down really well! A friend of mine sitll reads to his son at night, even though he's 13! It's a lovely and useful thing to do at any age, I think...

101 Dalmations and the sequel, The Starlight Barking - Dodie Smith. Don't be put off by the fact that Disney screwed the story over - it's wonderful!

Enid Blyton again - the Island of Adventure which is the first in a series, and The Secret Island, again the first in a series (loved this one when I was a kid - four children living on a secret island without anyone knowing where they are!)

My DD is enjoying My Naughty Little Sister, Milly-Molly-Mandy and the Rainbow Fairies books.

I have two dd's aged 7&8- we have read Roahl Dahl, Enid Blyton- The Faraway Tree books, Wishing Chair and the secret seven. We have also read Rainbow Fairies (there are loads- best to start in order- they are a little tedious but the dd's like them). Youngest dd also likes Horrid Henry- she can read these herself aswell- but likes them being read to her. Secret Unicorn books, Twins at St Clares, Milly Molly Mandy are all great too :)

Dd1 is very keen on the agatha parrot books (kjartan poskitt) and i enjoy reading them too. Also dr. Procters fart powder (jo nesbø) i think thats the english title anyway....
She enjoyed the first cressida cowell dragon book but we havent tried any of the others yet

Try your local library, and ask your librarians for recommendations. The summer reading challenge is on at the moment, some years I have had one book for them to read to me and another which I can read to them. This year they are all reading two at a time. Once you find a genre which she likes then look on the book people website or in second hand shops.

I'm reading "The Secret Garden" to my 7 year old DS at the moment. Used to read secret seven books, but he reads those on his own these days.

My dd is 7yo and absolutely loves the 'Daisy and the Trouble with' series there are quite a few of them, particular favourites are the trouble with coconuts, trouble with life, trouble with maggots. You can pick them up on Amazon quite cheaply and they are funny enough for me to enjoy reading them with her as well!! They have also encouraged independent reading.

She also likes the flat stanley books (although I find them a bit dated and American), the worst witch, anything by Roald Dahl, starting to get into puppy adventures (there are loads of them and my dd loves dogs).
