Kindle for a 9 year old

My DD is a total bookworm. She reads constantly and her room is full to the brim with books. She has asked for a Kindle for her 9th birthday and DH and I are considering it. She doesn't have any other screen thing (ie iPad) and we were only thinking of the most basic model.

Has anyone else got one for their dc.

We got DS1 a Nook when they were heavily reduced, recently (though the selection of books and ability to preview them is nowhere near as good as on a Kindle).

I think they're fab and I use my own every day. Unlike an LCD screen, the e-ink screens aren't over stimulating so are just like a book to look at. (They don't bounce so when when I fall asleep reading them, mind!)

My son is 7 and is currently reading my kindle! I struggle to prise it away from him!

6.5 year old DD loves it when I occasionally download a book for her on mine... I can easily see her wanting her own in a couple of years and no way would I stop her - it encourages reading, no additional strain on the eyes, and far less storage than all the books!

I think it's great if you can afford to keep buying books on it (you can get kindle vouchers which might be good) - as opposed to using the library which would perhaps be better for a really voracious reader who races through lots of series? (I may be biased due to my job :o) Although if you are buying lots of books anyway it might end up cheaper to be the ebook version.

Would definitely suggest an eInk type rather than LCD screen. Much more eye-friendly.

Both my dses have kindles, ds1 is 10, ds2 is 8. They are both on my account and ds2 reads books ds1 has already read so makes it more cost efficient.

Ds2 switches between kindle and real books depending on what he fancies reading. He's got dh's old basic non keyboard kindle and is perfectly happy with it.

Ds1 got a kindle Paperwhite for Christmas which he loves.

Both are bookworms and the kindle really is so easy to read on.

There was a study recently saying kids who read on Kindles read less and less well so we're holding back with our avid reader 9 year olds and 8 year old- going by the saying "if it ain't broke".

May get them further down the line for travel but will limit use to just that .To be frank they're in front of screens all day at school and the less screen time they have imvho.

You can order any real books from the library for free.

Mr How exactly? If you have an original kindle (not the fire) it is almost exactly like reading a book. They are not back lit so not tiring on the eyes.

How can you read 'less well' surely if you can read, then you can read.

Genuinely confused.

I would also like to see the study, I can't see how reading on a kindle is any different from reading a book. My 11 year old has a kindle (I was sick of him nicking mine), he also goes to the library where he can order books and get them within days ( the library system in Oz is fantastic) but he prefers to read on his kindle as it is easier to hold.

I would too - not in an "I don't believe you" way but it sounds interesting.

My DD can read but I've not encouraged her to try my kindle (keyboard, ie not the LCD type) yet because it's mine dammit but she is only just 6.

As an aside, I have twin DSDs, one who read early and extremely well, one who still struggles (they are now 15) and is dyslexic. It was the latter who asked for a kindle a few years ago - not sure what reason, as it was from her mum. She doesn't use it much though as she still finds it hard (I've recommended audiobooks which she is going to try as she is actually very good at English in school and loves stories) - so my sample of 2 would certainly fit the results :o (other DSD is now using the kindle)

I would, but here in Italy there is a lack of children's books for Kindle. It's great when travelling, or away from home.

I ould say go for it if a normal kindle and not the fire. I replaced ds2 (11) broken kindle with a kindle fire and he rarely used it for reading and would be playing games or browsing the internet, so I brought a basic kindle and the fire has to be left downstairs when he goes to bed.
