Books for babies :)

Hi everyone. I'm looking for suggestions on which books are a great starter for my 3 month old son. I know he doesn't understand what I'm saying yet but I've read it's good to start reading to babies from a young age. I've recently purchased "No Matter What" by Debi Gliori and thought it was really good :)

Have you come across the 'That's not my...' series? There are loads of them, with simple, bold pictures and language and touchy feely patches on each page. Also, as they're Usborne, you have the little mouse to find on each page, which will be good for when your son gets older. DD loves them (she's just turned 1 but she's been around books from birth).

Other than that, anything with feely patches - even though your son doesn't yet understand what you're saying he can interact with the book and you can jsut describe the pictures etc. Bet it won't be long before he does begin to make sense of the language. Our local library has a great selection of board books for babies (and they don't fine you if they get chewed!) so I'd suggest you join if you haven't already.

My little boy loved "Where is the Green Sheep?". It was the only story he would listen to for about a year after he wad old enough to express a preference.

That's not my... Series is fabulous, repetitive but very good for babies and toddlers.

Peekaboo baby and Spot are good too, as are black and white books for babies at that age

My son adores books. I read to him everyday since he was born. I read longer books when he was tiny, like the Julia Donalson ones, hungry caterpillar etc. when he was a little older and more interactive I bought loads of the 'that's not my...' books mentioned above, plus lift the flap board books such as Spot and Dear Zoo. He adores them even now at 18m. His favourites are hungry caterpillar - the board book version with the different sized pages and holes in them - and Dear Zoo. Both perfect for teaching fruits, animal noises, numbers, colours etc.

There's a series featuring Noodle the panda which is nice for babies. By Marion something. 'Noodle Loves Bedtime' was a favourite (the pro sleeping message didn't sink in though!)

Yy to the 'That's not my....' series - I'm slowly collecting the whole lot. My DD is 7 months and been reading to her from the beginning. She loves it. The peek a boo series is good as well. I've bought a couple of books that I get enjoyment out of reading too, 'I Want My Hat Back' by Jon Klassen is hilarious if not a little macabre at the end (not in an obvious or nasty way though) and 'A Bit Lost' by Chris Haughton is just lovely.

Any of the Janet and Allan Ahlberg ones. My DS discovered my old copies when he was little, they are classics.

Lots of classic picture books are available as board books - means you don't have to be so worried about pages being ripped (as will happen with babies at some point).

Don't forget library too, great way of trying out lots of books and seeing which ones you like.

My children also liked looking at catalogues/recipe books when little - especially pictures of cake! Doesn't have to be a story, just snuggling up turning pages and talking about the pictures is all good stuff.

DD loves books with photos of other babies.
