Book suggestions, please. Easy plot, difficult language.

I'm truely fed up with some of dd's bookcase, they're all so boring! We have many books she is just about able to read on her own (stage 10 / cream / rainbow fairy type) which is great for her to read alone and build confidence, but they do nothing to enhance her language (PFB ALERT!)

Are there any books around with a simple storyline and adventurous language which I can read to her for her bedtime story?

So far dd has enjoyed the Beatrix Potter books, Leon and the place inbetween, and some of the easy shakespeare books. All of which I find less mind numbingly boring to read aloud than the goody goody fairy books.

She has just discovered puns and word play, and loves the sound of unusual words.

How old is she?

Have you tried reading aloud things like The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe. ds listened to that when he was 5/6 (rest of the series when he was older)

unusual language - Just So Stories - Rudyard Kipling (you need to read those very expressively to get the meaning)

Iron man - Ted Hughes - this is ONLY worth listening to, it is boring to read to yourself and comes alive when read out loud.

Winnie the Pooh - the proper original, fantastic humorous language, lots of subtle jokes actually really only for 7/8 year olds, in its original form.

I came on to say Just So Stories. These are more for you to read with her but they are fantastic. WE have a wonderful CD of Johnny Morris reading them which is great.

Also what about poetry. DD is getting really into it. I started her with a book of children's poems for every day which she enjoys and she also loves AA Milne and Hillaire Belloc for fun wordplay and new words.
