Which book to get a 14 year old girl into reading

I am looking for a book/books for my 14 year old sis in law who does not read too much (no reading culture in the family...), does not do too well in school but is quite open to try.
Which book to give her to get her fascinated with reading, to really get her into it so she cannot stop? I just want to get her out from in from of the TV and start reading.
PS. She lives in a small Caribbean island......

I think I was about 12/13 when I read this book and think of it often.

It would probably help if you said what she was interested in.

Im not really sure what she is interested in, as I see her once in 2 years! She watches TV a lot, movies like Twilight etc...

Well obviously the Twlight books would be the top pick if she doesn't have them, but what you'd gain in literacy you might lose in enlightened attitudes.

My DD loves The Hunger Games, and also enjoyed Room recently

The Cay is a classic and not too long and is set in the Caribbean during the war.

quirrelquarrel, I didnt know teenagers liked Torey Hayden. I am surprised.
Good surprised though.

If she likes Twilight she might like the Vampie Academy series by Richelle Mead. Its written for teens and there's a whole world of vampires and dhampires to get to know plus a strong love story element too.

My favourite books at that age were Howl's Moving Castle and The Changeover plus a whole lot of Stephen King, Dean Koontz and so forth. However I was an avid reader, so perhaps something like Judy Blume's Forever would grab her attention more. Not sure how you/her Mum would feel about the content though.

Has she read Twilight?

Dd1 is an avid reader but dd2 has never liked reading much. She enjoyed Twilight, The Hunger Games and Michael Grant's 'Gone' series though. She also really liked 'Lord Of The Flies.'

The Dragons of Pern (sex and all!), the older Jacqueline Wilson books like Dustbin Baby, Illustrated Mum, Lola Rose & Kiss, SE Hinton books (like The Outsiders), Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, The Hunger Games (trilogy), Pigtopia, Almost anything by Paul Zindel, The Book Thief.

My Sister Sif is set on a tropical island, it's a fantasy with merpeople in it.
Island of the Blue Dolphins is about a young girl left behind when her people are evacuated from a small island - she has to fend for herself for years.
The Keeley Thomson (Thompson? one of the two) series by PS Power is good, they're funny more than scary, written for YA, about a high school girl who finds out she is actually a Greater Demon (in spite of being a good girl who works hard at school) and has to get control of all her powers and avoid other demons and things that want to kill her.
If she likes Twilight she might like Insurgent and Divergent, or the Tomorrow When the War Began series.

My Mum gave me some Molly Parkin, but not sure ill be doing the same when Dd gets to that age
