The Power of Five

Hi. I'm thinking of getting the new Anthony Horowitz, Power of Five books for my 10 year old. He loved the Alex Rider series and is an avid reader but I think the subject matter of these books looks a little dark. Does anyone have any advice?? Thanks.

Dd1 loves Alex Rider but found these were much harder to get into. She discovered the Cherub books and decided they were the way to go and left the Power of Five ones unfinished.

My DS is 11 next week. He has read the first 2 and is just starting the 3rd. He enjoyed Alex Rider, also reads the Henderson Boys. I think these may be more like the Percy Jackson books which he also enjoyed.

I think these are less easy to appreciate as a series. I also think that Horowitz either lost interest or got seriously waylaid doing other projects between starting this series and the final volume which only arrived this autumn: it loses a lot of impetus in the story-telling as the series goes along, and I don't think, ever really takes off as as an engaging set of books/characters.

I imagine your son would like the Young Bond books by Charlie Higson, but if he's not up for darker stuff, leave the exellent "zombie" series by Higson (The Dead, The Enemy, The Fear, The Sacrifice) well alone for a year or two.
