2 boys- 9 and 11. Quite strict parents so nothing too adult.
2 girls 9 and 11. Less strict parents but as the older one is begging for Jackie Collins and they are saying no I need something tame but not babyish!

Any help would be lovely!

11 year old who wants Jackie Collins: Book token. Let her parents continue the argument in the bookshop. (And perhaps a suggestion that she should show some personal initiative and borrow all her pornography from the library like the rest of us had to?)

9 year old boy: Beano annual.

I recommend Harry Potter, Percy Jackson and Sean Yeager for the boys.
Possibly Artemis Fowl as well.

I've no idea what girls are reading these days. Angus Snogging and Thongs was one I came across ages ago, not that I'm recommending it.
I guess the Hunger Games might appeal? Possibly too old.

Is Judy Blume still on the go? That might be acceptable compromise for Jackie Collins?

Michael murpurgo good for others? Think you can get full set of 16 for £16 at Book People just now

My suggestions:
Horrible science/geography/murderous maths series for 11yo boy (see what's on offer at the Book People); The Hobbit/ LOTR.
A good hard backed picture non-fiction reference book for 8yo boy (space, dinosaurs, his favourite sports).

Girls - 9yo, The Little White Horse (recommeded by JK Rowling).. some How to tame your dragon series or Jacqueline Wilson. Ingo series by Helen Dunmore is excellent.
11 yo...Hunger Games, Noughts and Crosses, Pegasus series... Alex Rider...Or a graphic novel of Macbeth/Romeo & Juliet?

DD (12, young for her years) recommends The Fire Within series for girls...

For the girls, I would recommend Beswitched by Kate Saunders. It is recommended, on the back of the book, as a 9+. But it does use the f* word once! Which I sort of think spoilt it, there was no need!
Or There's A Boy In The Girls' Bathroom, by Louis Sachar.
Or Four Children And It, by Jacqueline Wilson. Together with the original Five Children And It, by E Nesbit.

Friesops Fables a brand new publication by author, Julian Defries. is now a firm bedtime favourite in my house. Beautifully ?drawn? both in words and pictures. One of the stories is an analogy of a business panda seeking to ?corner the market? in bamboo, comparing him to the power hungry, wealth obsessed, businessmen we are all too familiar with. Very relevant to today?s world.

Patrick Ness/ Anthony Horowitz/Robert Muchamore 11 year old boy.

Percy Jackson good for 9 year old boy but may have read. If bookish then The Phantom Tollbooth or The Mysterious Benedict Society? Or the new Lemony Snicket? Mortal Engines by Phillip Reeve if likes fantasy.

Girls: for 9 year old. Tough, especially if she has an older sister and has already been dipping into her Jacqueline Wilson/Louise Rennison. Hilary Mckay is good (funny sweet eccentric family stories). She may also like all recommended for boy above. Frank Cottrell Boyce is also a really sweet, funny writer.

11 year old girl who wants to read Jackie Collins...hmm. I Capture the Castle? The Pursuit of Love? She's pretty much ready for the full on YA experience. John Green's books are lovely (though officially aimed at 14 plus). Sarah Dessen and Maureen Johnson also good on 'relationship' YA for want of a better word.
On another tack The Folio Society have some lovely classic hardbacks and have some offer on atm so less eyewateringly expensive. Or Penguin also do some beautiful classic hardbacks.
