not much to go on, I'm afraid, but I remember enjoying it when I was about 9. It's a sort of magical mythical theme and starts off with a girl finding a stone circle of some sort because it's in a cornfield and the crops won't grow over where the stones are buried. That's all I can remember, so thanks in advance and congratulations to anyone clever enough to get it!

I thought it might have been The dark is rising by Susan cooper, but although that has circles in it the main character is a boy. Off to buy a copy of that - will keep thinking.....

TheDoctrineOfSnatch · 13/10/2012 08:11

There are six books in The Dark Is Rising sequence and there is a girl as well. Might be Seaward?

I thought that too and bought it, but definitely not. Am wondering whether it was a Penelope Lively.

Funny you should say that as have just been googling books by penelope lively - I'm pretty sure I had a hardback of the book you're looking for as a child - I can see the cover in my mind but unfortunately not the title.... And was sure that the author's first name was penelope....

Gosh - had forgotten the Whispering Knights ... Feel an expensive amazon order coming on....

pinkthechaffinch · 13/10/2012 08:25

Might it be marianne dreams by Catherine store. There are standing stones in that.

I'd better hide this thread before it makes me jump in the car to my parents and dig out my books...

TheDoctrineOfSnatch · 13/10/2012 08:28

Legal what did the cover look like in your head?

legalalien · 13/10/2012 08:39

The cover looked like it had been painted, and had sort of yellowish grass stuff on the bottom half (I guess wheat or corn) and was then more grey at the top, and I think there were some stones. Not the same one as the whispering knights which sounds similar - I had this one cover

Is it the Giant under the Snow?
