Chapter books to read to boys

dd (8) is getting the benefit of my love of children's books which has persisted long beyond my own childhood - Ballet Shoes, The Wolves of Willoughby Chase, The Secret Garden etc.

But I'm a bit stuck for things to read ds1 (6) and ds2 (5). We have done most of the Roald Dahl ones they are prepared to listen to (they are both terrified of The Witches and The BFG) and apart from the Famous Five I'm a bit stumped. What are the boy equivalents? I have a list as long as my arm of things I know dd will adore, but the boys aren't that interested in tales of ballet.

DS loves David Walliams books - Gangsta Granny being a favourite, he is 6.

He was quite receptive to the Faraway Tree - but wouldn't admit to it.

Captain underpants and beastquest are favourites in this house but I guess 5us abit young. Horrid Henry? My five year loved the faraway tree :)

Dinosaur Cove by Rex Stone - there's twenty-odd of them in the series and working our way through them is keeping dinosaur-mad ds (6) happy. They're not exactly literary fiction, but hey ho!

How To Train Your Dragon books
Enid Blyton, The [insert noun here] of Adventure
The Land Of Green Ginger
The Indoor Pirates (Jeremy Strong series)

Just William books
The first couple of Harry Potters

DS (7) has enjoyed Dr Doolittle, Dick King-Smith books, Charlotte's Webb and The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe recently...we are now on the 3rd Famous Five book and both he and I (to my surprise!) are really enjoying them Grin

Jeremy Strong- THere's a Viking under my bed, The Usborne Illustrated Book for Boys- short stories, but DS loved when he just turned 5 and still likes now almost 6. Wizard of Oz, Mr Majeika, Captain Underpants- DS loves although he's quite young for them. Horrid Henry, bit annoying for me but DS likes and reads himself sometimes now.

Would agree with loads of the suggestions above. What about Karlson on the Roof?

ballstoit · 18/09/2012 20:55

Oh, and The Spiderwick Chronicles.

There are some great ideas here, thank you. And some that dd would also enjoy, so will definitely seek them out. My Amazon wish list is growing!

One of my favourites as a girl was The Pirates in the Deep Green Sea by Eric Linklater, which is about two brothers. Not sure whether it's still in print but it's worth finding a copy.

Also Moomintroll and many of the ones mentioned above
