Survey on Children's Reading for a dissertation

Hello. I am writing my dissertation on children's apps and reading as I am interested in whether children will be encouraged or distracted by new digital reading devices (such as the iPad). I would very much appreciate it if you could take my survey or leave any comments you might have on this topic on this thread.

The survey link: surveymonkey.com/s/WXGNJ2Q

Many thanks!

Josie

My kids school actively encourage this. They read on computers at least once a week, and have access from home to a website (Phonics bug) where they can read books online. It's good because it can be more interactive, quizzes on the book etc.

done

not sure I'm much help as we don't have kindle etc!

I completed your survey :) The Kindle has been great for my daughter who has found reading challenging. She enjoyes stories appropriate to her age, however her reading ability is below average for her age. Printed books for her age range tend to have smaller print and lots of text to a page, she finds this overwhelming and it puts her off reading, she feels daunted by all the text on the page. However with the Kindle we can increase the font size, this gives fewer words to a page and makes it look like an easier book to read. Since getting a Kindle for christmas she has read far more books than previously, she has her nose in a book at every opportunity now - result! :)

That's wonderful, Sophia! I had never thought of a Kindle in those terms before!!

Yes it is wonderful, the Kindle has been a real asset for her reading. I mentioned this to her class teacher earlier in the year at a parent's evening, she was thrilled because there are some other children in her class she thought it would be useful for.

Done -
Just to make you aware, DD has tried reading from the kindle app on my phone but really doesn't like it. Wish she did as it would be so convenient when out and about!

Thank you everyone so much! This is all really helpful!

I'm glad the kindle can encourage some of your kids to read. I'm sure it's an individual thing but if it's working for some of you then yay. :)

Thanks again!

We don't have a Kindle or ipad (shock horror). I think the DS Flips preceded the Kindle and are helpful in getting children to tackle longer books. The books make noises/collect stars etc. However I do have concerns about overall screen time so make sure we have plenty of 'proper' books around.
