July's book of the month - Florentine and Pig by Eva Katzler

Our July book of the month, Florentine and Pig Have a Very Lovely Picnic is the brainchild of singer-songwriter Eva Katzler. She devised the partnership of Florentine and Pig as a way of encouraging children (and adults) to rediscover the joys of making things together and includes recipes and craft ideas from the story so that children can make their own picnics a-la Florentine and Pig. The story is brought to life by the wonderful illustrations of Jess Mikhail who uses mixed media by scanning fabrics, scribbling, blobbing, mono-printing and photographing.

Visit our July book of the month book of the month page for more information about the book, a video of the duo in action and details about how to claim a free copy.

We have 50 copies of Florentine and Pig to give away this month. The application form will be open from tomorrow, 3 July at 10am until 10am on Wednesday 4 July. All winners will be notified within 48 hours of closing the form. Read the book with your DCs and share their thoughts and your own opinions. All Mumsnetters who join in the discussion this month will be entered into a draw to win a £100 voucher for Hobbycraft.

sounds like a good book, count me in I would love to win one!

ShouldersBackAndNoBiscuits · 03/07/2012 14:56

The illustrations look nice, and seems like a good concept - hope I win a copy!

Sassyfrassy · 03/07/2012 15:00

I like the idea of the story inspiring play and crafts.

weenwee · 03/07/2012 15:07

Oh my gosh, the illustrations are so cute! Well done.

Housemum · 03/07/2012 15:09

This looks fab - might persuade my picky-eating 4 year old to take more of an interest in food, so long as it's not all cupcakes and biscuits. Don't think I'll have any trouble persuading either of my girls with the crafts. Can't review it until I have (hopefully) won a copy, or had to buy one but my one thought would be has the author considered doing a boy's book - Florentine's and Pig's cousins, perhaps? Off fighting imaginary dragons or sailing a boat? This range is fine for me as I only have daughters but there must be a market for boys to cook and do crafts.

costumequeen · 03/07/2012 15:11

I know the illustrator and she is very lovely! So glad it is getting such a good response as it is a really sweet book! (not that I'm biased ;-))

We have just bought piglets and my 2 daughters have fallen in love with them. Especially as they follow the eldest round. Might have to buy it as the girls would love it.

hytheliz · 03/07/2012 16:07

Looks like a lovely book!

Shouldacouldawoulda · 03/07/2012 16:13

What a lovely concept. I can't wait to read the book. I have put "hold a Florentine and Pig" picnic party on my list of things to do in the holidays when I have a houseful of other people's children.

I am particularly impressed with the lemonade and muffin recipes, I have loads of beetroot in the garden. :)

JoLucy · 03/07/2012 16:19

Looks like a lovely book and a great concept. Am keeping my fingers crossed that we win a copy. Thanks for the giveaway!

HerRoyalGoddess · 03/07/2012 16:22

TheTempest · 03/07/2012 17:01

Looks wonderful, really reminds me of childrens books that I loved when I was young. Fingers crossed!

gazzalw · 03/07/2012 17:03

Yes, this looks very appealing for DD who is 6 as she still loves a picture story book!

newlark · 03/07/2012 17:14

The concept looks great - I loved the trailer - I think dd (5) would adore it but it is probably a bit girly for ds.

SunnyCarrie · 03/07/2012 18:11

Any book for a child is a great book, my 17 month old chooses books over toys every time but add in that book some beautiful illustrations and a fun and hopefully inspiring story for food it rapidly becomes a mothers bible for her handbag!

mummy1973 · 03/07/2012 18:57

The pictures are adorable. I think the whole family and our friends would enjoy this (we always pass books on to next door and then they do to their neighbour the other side)!

HannahLI · 03/07/2012 19:44

I think it's a lovely book and would like to see a copy in real life too. The concept is great and a great way to encourage making together.

SleepyFergus · 03/07/2012 21:13

Looks like a lovely books and the illustrations are gorgeous. I love buying books for DD1 and this ticks a lot of boxes in that it's more than just a story. And now that I've just had dd2 (1 week old today - yay!) even more of a reason to indulge (if I don't get lucky on the giveaway that is!)

Congrats to the author and look forward to further books.

BlueCrystal · 03/07/2012 22:13
