He loves animals, and we have just finished Jill Tomlinson's chapter books - the owl who was afraid of the dark, the cat who wanted to go home, the arradvark and hen and penguin! I would like more, similar books for him - for me to read to him (at the moment). Can anyone recommend any? Thanks :)

Owl Babies. And we loved Hairy McLairy, lots of dogs and a few cats.

The mole who knew it was none of his business.
Hairy Maclary
Owl Babies is lovely! AND THEN SHE CAME!

Lots of books by Dick King Smith - particularly the Sophie books but also his various animal stories (I particularly liked The Invisible Dog partly because dd had her own invisible dogs when she was little :) ). Also Gobbolino the Witches Cat by Ursula Moray Williams.

DD is 5, and loves Sam Pig (Alison Uttley). You can get a big book of them from Faber (new), or little separate stories with colour pictures (second hand). Sam Pig and the Dragon is one of the best, but they're all fun, and the writing is beautiful.

Which of the other Jill Tomlinson ones would you recommend? We've read the Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark.

Giles Andreae. Most of his books are about animals. My DS is 4 and he particularly loves The Chimpanzees of Happytown and Giraffes Can't Dance. Also, The Farmyard Tales books by Heather Amery and Stephen Cartwright are very good to read, especially if you want a few books with the same characters in each story.

Magic Kitten/Puppy/any other animal they've done since I last looked are quite fun, although he may think they're a bit girly, ds doesn't mind.

I think "THE Kitten who wanted to go home" is a Jill Tominson one. Had both my girls in tears! But it's lovely.

Agree Hairy McClary
Mudpuddle Farm series by Michael Morpurgo - right age.
Russell the sheep & the lost treasure (not chapter book but lovely with fab illustrations).
