It's dd's 9th birthday soon, I'm very low on ideas, so thought a magazine subscription might be good..?

Have come across The Discovery Box, which I can buy with my Tesco vouchers, does anyone's child read it, is it any good ?

The other one I've been recommended it Aquila, which looks good, but much more expensive. Dd isn't much of a reader, but I think would be interested in the nature/science aspect.

Aquila gets highly recommended here. Dunno if she's too young?
Don't get NG Kids, bit pants!
Flipside is great for age 11+.
DS has a sub to The Phoenix (comics successor to DFC).

thanks - I did a search on Aquila & if you think 9 is a bit young, it probably is. I might get a trial, but am tempted to use my vouchers...trouble is on the rare occasion she is bought a magazine, she chooses by the free gift Hmm.

Not sure The Phoenix is her thing, but worth a punt, thanks.

Ref NG Kids, I was given a load by freecycle & she looked at me like I was insane when I handed her one..I thought she might grow into it..perhaps not..

It's a shame, I used to LOVE comics when I was young...Bunty, Mandy etc, but she seems to gain little pleasure from reading...fine being read to though.

I think NG kids is just a bit rubbish - DD had a subs for a year (from my DMs Tesco vouchers!) - her two 'things' are reading & animals/wildlife, but she really wasn't that taken by it. TBH the NG kids mags seem to be mostly product placement with minimal real content.

so where are the Bunty/Mandy alternatives when we need them ?!
