When I was a child I read a story about "Simba the Lion"

Which was in a compilation of stories for children. From what I remember it was an excerpt from a novel. But I am 43 and I don't know it is related in any way to the modern "Lion King" movies. I have googled without much success to see if I can find the original story. Does anyone know who wrote these stories?

Yes, Skip, it could very well be that. The Simba in the story was on a long journey, though, and that one looks like a family pet! I will probably order it to see.
