No! (Horrified emoticon).

Is that the one with Smoky house in it? And a nice dog?
I loved all the Goudges, even the sickly sweet ones. And the adult ones.

She's not yet out of copyright, I assume.

Is there a biography of her, do you know?

niminypiminy · 27/03/2012 13:12

Why it hasn't been reprinted is beyond the wit of man. Have you read City of Bells -- the adult book to which HH is the sequel?

I got a copy for less than a tenner through amazon, and it was just as good as I remembered it from my childhood. Some of Goudge's novels are being reprinted: I've got my hands on Green Dolphin Country which remember devouring as a teenager.

Ooh! I got one for £1.50 years back. Grin

On eBay here - good luck!

SecretNutellaFix · 27/03/2012 21:42

I love Elizabeth Goudge.

Sadly, I think it's just because it isn't fashionable any more. I really like that book.

Another one I loved was Thursday's Children by Rumer Godden.

HandMadeTail · 27/03/2012 21:42

I'd forgotten all about this book! Why is it out of print?

BelleDameSansMerci · 27/03/2012 21:49

There are quite a few of her books on eBay. The Little White Horse was one of my favourite books as a child... Quite tempted by the others now.

Have just bought a reprint of LWH hardback with illustrations for a friend.

Love all the ones I've read. Is it the scent of water that is set in the chilterns and has a brilliant description of a serious breakdown? Loved city of bells, the deans watch, green dolphin country and island magic. I reread towers in the must recently and although I couldn't take some of it, Giles still made me cry.

Loved linnets and valarians.

Was the niece nice?

spendthrift · 28/03/2012 23:00

Ps love love Rumer Godden. Knew a nun who knew her.

niminypiminy · 28/03/2012 23:40

Just ordered Scent of Water, which I'd forgoten about. I read The Dean's Watch recently, absolutely brilliant -- well, if you like Elizabeth Goudge at all.

Speaking of Rumer Godden: has anybody else read Miss Happiness and Miss Flower? I loved that book as a child. I longed for that Japanese dolls' house.

DeWe · 29/03/2012 12:38

Niece was lovely. I knew her as a sort of honary great aunt. She was good friends with one of my great uncles.

My dm met Elizabeth Goudge once through her.

I loved Elizabeth Goudge's books and read most of them as a teenager. One that made a huge impression was 'Towers in the Mist', set in Oxford during the reign of Elizabeth I. This website is interesting...
