The Roman Mysteries series is quite good. They're by Caroline Lawrence.

Rosemary Sutcliffe did a lot of these many years ago. Eagle of the Ninth was one of them. Don't know if they are still available.

Eagle of the Ninth and the rest of the trilogy are available as ebooks now .

Second the Roman Mysteries here. DD (7) loved them.
