DS(8) let me read him a bedtime story, happily, for the first time in a year this week......

.....thanks to the suggestion of a lovely MNer.

I read " The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig" on her recommendation. He adores it and DH and I have read it to him 4 times now.

I would really, really appreciate any suggestions for "if he liked that, he might like these......"

I think we were going wrong trying to read him chapter books with no pictures - he likes looking at the pics, he likes the humour and the aggression of the big bad pig, and he liked the happy ending.

So any other picture books for an 8 yo boy that anyone can think of would be much appreciated. I tried Stinky Cheeseman but he didn't like that so much.

I have - he's read lots of Roald Dahl - but when he was younger.

Aw, I love that story so much. I like the kindly rhinoceros who gives them some reinforced plexiglass and padlocks out of the goodness of his heart.

What about How the Grinch Stole Christmas.

Beware of the storybook wolves - Lauren Child
A series of unfortunate events - Lemony Snicket has short chapters, lots of action, and quite a few pictures.
I would search for books he likes on Amazon and see what their suggestions are, also go to the library and see what takes his fancy there.

Curious George
Peter's railway (it has loads of geeky train diagrams alongside the main storyGrin)

Sam who never forgets

i've not read that but have you tried The Tree Hose by gillian Cross?

Do you want recommendation for books to read to him or for him to read himself!

Picture wise Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Captian Underpants are great

have been recommeeded but not tried Ottline and the ýellow cat. As î've not even got as far as looking at the book in the library I can't tell you if it good (i've a picture loving 8 year old boy too!)

DilysPrice · 04/03/2012 12:36

Ottoline books do have lots of pictures - good call.

TaffeTalentManagement · 04/03/2012 15:40

Thanks all. Its for me to read to him, but he wants to have a good look at the pictures. Pref a short story rather than a chapter book. Ottoline books look great, but they are chapter books

I do have the Storybook Wolves somewhere, will try it again.

Most of the Dr Seuss he's read to DD (5). We read all the Capt Underpants ones a few years ago, and he reads Wimpy Kid on his own.
